As I was searching through my room, I found my once lost Valhallans. With numerous men, and heavy weapons they were ready. But as I looked deeper I noticed that I had 6 mortars. Is 6 mortars good to have in an army I thought to myself ? I debated countlessly and asked so many of my friends. Mortars are expensive and not worth taking over a lascannon of heavy bolter. But then I asked my self has anyone really tried them out, is having 6 enough to make this once famed weapon a thing of glory? I figured barrage rule willbe helpful a lot to slow down numbers armies, and laying down 6 template in the middle of that formation can be a ton of hurt.
The Predator Lingers forth. Suddenly the sound of several wipping sounds can be heard far off into the distance, a second later the once mighty Predator ignited with flames. "Sir what was that" The srgt replied "Its those damn Broadsides"
Hear the wip, fear the Broadside.
I like individual Mortars in my command squads that help with leadership, especially my HQ. Keep them out of LOS without much esle for Weaponry.
While against MEQ Armies they are not so good, they can be good vs Eldar, Orks, Nids, and I find especially Tau (Stealth Suits).
I always have one in my army, sometimes 2, but no more.

Sir Winston Churchil
Mortars are a godsend as far as im concerned. most of my experience with 4th edition has been playing my guard against other guard. while the mortars themselves dont inflict that many casulties, the pinning of the units makes them fish in a barrel. for armor a basilisk is useful.
I guess two Heavy weapon squads with mortars can be good, but not single ones.
whenever i can i take 15mortars i alwys take 2 for my CMD squad and if i have the points i take them in heavy weapons platoons (im a all infantry+ sentinels guard player)
I dont think you can take 2 heavy weapons per command squad.
I have found mortar barrages to be an excellent way of suppressing hoards (especially orcs). I taken two groups of 3 as part of my HQ. Worked a treat.
Imperial Guard: 2500pts 10/0/1, Space Marines: 2000pts 22/0/3
CSM: 1750pts 5/0/0, DE: 1850pts 19/0/1, ORKs: 2500pts 11/1/0,
lol i ment 2 squads sorry (support squads) i dont take any in my actual HQ, although that might allow me to get more... hmmmmmmm
It's not a bad idea to throw them in your command squad, but then you have to resist the temptation to give him any fun wargear... if he's got a heavy weapon in his squad he shouldn't really be moving... just providing his leadership. Also remember not to take any priests if you're going to put heavy weapons in your command squads. I, personally, always throw mortars in my two platoon HQs, and let my commander run around the field barking orders and getting some shots off.Originally Posted by insomnia
