Heya, I'd just like to get a little advice on what would be best to equip my DH army with if I am to play my friend's Mech Tau army. His army (in a nutshell) is 3 hammerheads (2 with twin linked railguns and 1 with twin linked fusion cannon) and then 3 large groups of firewarriors all with transport.
For a 1500 pt. game, what would be the best things to go with....need anti tank
Honestly? I would induct some IG for heavy weapons. With two railguns any tank is history on turn 1 and the submunitions will turn your troops to goo. I think your priority should be to take out the hammerheads as soon as possible. A few IG squads with lascannon should do the trick nicely, just keep them in cover.
My best opinion against his list is to use an IG force with DH as allies. I would bring a Command Squad with heavy weapon support squads, two squads of infantry with lascannon, and spend the rest on GKs. My old 1850 list brought more than 10 missile launchers and lascannon to the table with three full GK units. That would really put a hurtin' on your Tau opponent.
If you don't have any IG at your disposal I think you're going to have a very hard time. DH are notorious for their lack of tank-busting ability and your opponents list is centered around this fact. Your only real tank-busting ability comes from either a dreadnought or land raider, both of which are extremely vulnerable to railgun fire. Your opponent will most likely keep his skimmers away from you and pound away with long-range firepower.
I'm sorry for not offering much in the way of assistance.
I do not criticize. I do not offend. All I offer is my opinion which means only as much as you make it.
If you don't have inducted IG, I would take three TLLC Dreads with ML, and Lots of Psycannons. Devilfish have AV12 front armour I believe and 11 side, so lots of Psycannon glancing hits are the way to go.
Keep back and together until the Transports have been destroyed, Mech Tau are excellent at picking off solitary units.

He doesn't have any suits? You're very lucky, the suits Plasma rifles could really wreck your day.
For the FW, DSing dome FW on their position could suck......if you catch them disembarked. Do you have ST with meltas? That could help. allieing with either Dominion squads or Seraphim could work really great.
Also, if you DS some psycannons, in different positions areound the board, chances are good for getting rear armor.
Is there some rule i dont know about? Because last time i checked im pretty sure the codex says you can take either a Railgun or an Ion Cannon on a Hammerhead, and not even a twin-linked version of either.
If this is not the case then i would advise using one of my most recent sucesses, A DS'ing Terminator squad of four, each with a Chainfist, wait for his Devilfish to move in a predictable pattern like a circle or X pattern and DS were you think he will go next and then just rampage them through cover.
I know this has its flaws but its worked for me before and i see no reason why it shouldt work for you.

2) Can't give all the termies chainfists, only the Borther captain. ALso too expensive.
3) Can only hit skimmers in CC on 6's. WHich is why I prefer to shoot them.
