Like many others (I assume), I subscribed to White Dwarf. I give GW $60, they give me 12 issues, and a "free gift of approximately $20 value." Well, I got my free gift today (2 1/2 months after I subscribed, but they didn't say how long the shipping took, and I didn't expect them to rush around in order to give me something for free). It was a Cadian Sentinel.
I didn't expect them to give me anything worth more than $20, so I was happily surprised when they sent me the $30 version complete with extra armour, instead of the $25 one.
Now that I have this Cadian Sentinel, I have a question: How should I use it most effectively? I've never used a sentinel before, and I'm not really sure what to put on it. So I'll appreciate any tricks for switching the weapons out and other stuff. What's the best way to use it in a IG army?
Heresy! Sentinels are awesome!Originally Posted by CowboyAdam512
Sentinels are best used in a armour heavy army, with alot of tanks to draw the fire that would else, undoubtedly destroy the sentinel. Have it walk alongside a Russ, preferably behind it so it'll become obscurred and fire away.
Autocannon sentinels are the best friggin anti-transport unit we have, mine have destroyed an ridicilous ammount of rhinoes, razorbacks, wartrakks, warbuggies, raiders, land speeders and other light armour targets, but even a few wave serpents and dreadnoughts have fallen to my mighty autocannon sentinels. Mobile firepower is a great thing in a guard army.
Another use for sentinels is to throw them into close combat with a horde of str3 units - that's one mess they'll never get out from unless someone stronger comes to help them. It's a wonderfull tie-up unit against Orks(if you charge them) or gaunts without their str upgrade. I've had 22 gaunts locked in close combat with a sentinel for 4 rounds.
There are plenty of threads about sentinels, just use the search function. I myself love the buggers. :>
Sentinels are one of the most versatile and useful vehicles in the Imperial Guard armory. They can be equipped with a variety of different weapons (Including Multi Melta's if you have Imperial Armour III).
I personally equip mine with Heavy Flamers and give them the Drop Troops Doctrine. We only play Gamma level missions in my area, so I never have to worry about not being able to use Deep Strike.
The best strategy with them is to keep them cheap. If you must give them an expensive gun, such as a Lascannon, then don't give them any other upgrades except for Smoke Launchers. I have used three Sentinels with Lascannons with a high degree of success by just keeping them at the back of the table (Preferrably Hull Down) and making good use of their long range.
When one sentinel makes the difference in a game between to noobs and they're over confident friends, you feel good.
We one by like 20pts because i had been smashing his medium infanty witha Armageddon Sent. I always take at least one.

you need 2 more to make a sqaud then they are great for either tank or infintry hunting depending on what you equip them with
yeah i love sentinels, i just put that first post to get a good discussion and it worked. You must remember, the emperor works in mysterious ways.:shifty:

Personally I hate playing against them, as most of my squads can punch through their armour with firearms but before that happens they always get atleast a few of those las shots off and it starts to hurt.
They are indeed great tie up units, even better than my usual nurgling speedbump, as they can't be hurt in some cases where the lings could. Nothing is more frustrating than having your line of gaunts/boyz being trapped by 1 damn thing that has paper for armour.
Even if I got 2 more, I would field them in seperate squads. That way, instead of multiple sentinels being destroyed in one shooting phase by one enemy unit, it takes at least one seperate enemy unit per sentinel.Originally Posted by Kaiser
Just make sure you place it next to a "more imortant" target like a Russ. It should last most of the game.
