If the flamer was trimmed a bit, ie by taking off the canister, the lighter at the nozzle could it be used as a melta-gun?
I don't see why not. It would be a conversion, so as long as you tell your opponent what it is you should be ok. On my models I also use a color coding system in the end of the barrel. Flamers, lascannon, multi-lasers and lasguns/pistols are red. Melta weapons are Ultramarine blue. Plasma weapons are Dark Angels green. Bolters, heavy bolters, bolt pistols and Autocannons have black tips. This makes it easy to tell what they are at a glance.
generally, its fine to simply count it as a melta. but if you want to convert, go for it!

i have a similiar coding system too . its easy to see where your dev squads, assault squads, and tanks are on the board
