Hey guys, I'm going up against an Ork army next Saturday and need some advise on how to beat him. I use black templars and he has just over 200 orks in his army. We're doing 2000 points. I have a list that I think I'll use. It has for shooty (6 man termy with 2 AC, Dread with AC and ML, 4 Crusader with 5 guys, 2 with HB and 2 with ML, a Tornado with AC and HB and a Pred Dest. with H, I also have 2 15 man Crusaders lead by my Chap and EC in reserves for when the orks hit my line. I also have 2 5 man assault squads with 2 flamers each. I plan on using these as suicide mission guys that go up a flank and shoot their flamers and charge in to slow down the advance and squeeze the orks to where I want to go.
My plan is to obviously sit back and shoot and hope I can kill enough of them before they hit my lines. I have used a rough calculation and on average I will kill 96 of them by turn 3, turn 4 they are in my lines and it's anyones ballgame then. Any suggestions? Thanks! It's much appreciated.
Do you know what sort of orks he is playing? If he's Speed Freeks, he can be in your lines on turn 2...
only help i can think of is shoot em up before CC
I really, really frown on bringing any termies to this. Yes, the assault cannon is nice, but choppas just sort of grin when they face them. Couple this with the fact that he can drag your squads in close with a successful kill from shooting (you only need one!), and, well... orks like it when you move forward.
I do, however, approve of the suicidal assault squads. A little bit chedder-ish, perhaps, but a good, viable tactic.
Speaking as an ork player, I can't really suggest what tactics for you to use unless I know what sort of force he uses (feral, clan, codex, speed freaks, although I doubt the last one with the amount of orks he has), as each one will do different things to your line.
What sort of mission is this? Cleanse? Take and Hold? If its the latter, you'll be in trouble since those 4 expensive LRC can't claim objectives or corners if I recall correctly.

All types of Land Raiders can claim objectives and count as scoring units, even if they are taken as a dedicated transport.
I wouldn't count on the suicide assualt squads slowing them down. They may manage to kill alot of orks with the flamers, but if they charge them and lose too quickly, he'll get a consolidate move out of it, and every inch counts. Don't charge them in unless they you think they can survive a turn or two.

Choppas I've learned have special rules that lower your armour saves. Neophytes work
wonderfully for this, you need as much cannon fodder as you can get. The more troops
you have the better, Keep the less expensive items out such as sword brethren or
dreads. Go for all troops, and yes please use Land Raider Crusaders, the hurricane
bolters work wonderfully on this.
So heres the basic run down on what I've learned from a few helpfull souls in the LO
Take as many troop selections as possible, say three - four squads and maximize
your neophytes using Cc weapons and bolt pistols to allow for extra attacks, you'll
need them when it comes to turn three or four.
A full squad is around 200ish points, but is well worth it, you'll be using special rules
such as rightous zeal, and crusader seals, and your chapter motto or which ever you
You'll want to spend Turn 1 getting into position, Turn 2 taking firing lines and protecting
your flanks, and Turn three shoot the crap out of him as much as possible, this means
taking blast weapons, ordinance weapons, or heavy bolters to get as many shots as possible
Remember you've got a high rate AP for your normal bolter and they cant throw armour
saves unless there in cover.
You squad will have at least 15 models in it, 5 neophytes and 10 initiates. And you always
want to charge so you get your bonuses. Move as fast as possible and shoot, and do waves
of shooting till you absolutely have to charge. (And you always want to charge first)

BT are short on fire support. I suggest dropping the termies, they are too expensive and their armor is worthless against choppas. One Tornado isn't enough. You'll need at least three, preferably six against that many Orks. I would also suggest taking another Peredator Destructor w/HB sponsons. Drop at least one LRC and beef up your crusader squads.
Oh, I don't have any LRC's, I think those are just regular crusader squads. The only problem with a few of the suggestions is that I don't have the models for them. i wish I did, but I haven't had the money for them yet. I will look into dropping the termies. Should I switch the predator with a vindicator? It seems that it could take out more a turn. Anyways, thanks for the help.
I would keep the Predator and use the points from the termies to add a Vindicator. I read your original post too quickly and thought it said you had 4 LRC, but now I see it said 4 crusader squads.
I would think about taking a LRC if you've got one, even if it means that you drop the termies. TL AC, TL bolters x 6 rapidfiring mean a lot of dead orks. Drive it around empty and use it to cut across his lines. Just a thought.
Of course, the best would be to have a squadron of 3 LST's, but that's apparently not an option for you.
