hi im new here and i had an idea of starting a doom based ig army or just a * latd slann army
if you have any advice on painting or converting them please let me know and let me know if these doctrines sound right
1. caprice armour- because if you have played the game the sound the armor is pretty tough
2.Veterans- I though of the character and the sargent dude who gives you your first orders
3. Drop troops- i got this from the intro
4. Special weapon squads- i dont know i came to this one
5. Heavy weapon squads- ro this one ether
*= i dont know where this belongs
Most people will share that special and heavy weapon squads are kind of iffy due to the low body count and high point cost. Its generally better to tuck your heavy weapons into your squads where they are generally cheaper. As for special weapons command squads of platoons can use them pretty effectively in the counter assault role.
I'm still in the fledgling stages of doing a fully converted guard force so. Still on my 1st squad but I am 1/3d of the way there on that one.
All I can say is good luck, start slow and play them a little to get the feel for them.
Personally i'd say drop carapace armour, and pick up grenadiers, youd be basically paying 8 points per man for bad stormtroopers. Either that or just dont take carapace armoue at all (give you very expensive but not much tougher men, a heavy bolter will rip through the carapace just like the flak, and it'll be annoying to convert).... Im a great fan of heavy weopan *platoons* (remember you can attach HW squads to your HQ without taking the doctrine) pesonally so id say a good choice there. If your taking drop troops then ignore my prior advice on grenadiers (you wont be able to drop them in, its just there in case you change your mind)......
I'd agree entirely with Thunderer on the spec weopan squads though, as command squads do the bis with special weopans, their cheaper can have one more weopan and can have plasma (and in my opinion arn't good for much else).... Oh and veterans is always good, as long as you dont mind converting the squads. May i suggest looking at the Harakoni Warhawks from the back of the codex, as their fairly similar if i remember correctly.
Hope that helped.
yeah i know that caprice armour isnt tooint effective but it fits with thr fluf kinda and im more of a mix of elete and numbers and might work well with the plan of haveing a ton of plasma guns around
Spell check, the greatest invention since...Sliced n00bs:yes:Originally Posted by JaRhead
Anyways, Carapace armour isn't too great. I've experimented with it quite a bit trying to make a Harakoni Warhawks army. Special weapon squads combined with drop tropps isn't bad for suicide Melta squads or Flamer/Demolition Charge Squads. Heavy Weapon Platoons are another iffy gamble as you'll be sacraficing Heavy Support slots which could be better used for Basilisks or Leman Russ'. If all infantry is what you want though then this looks good. The carapace will come in handy for a few basic weapons like bolters, Pulse rifles and Shuriken guns, but once your squad comes under a barage of Heavy fire from plasma or missiles the carapace will just be extra Victory points for the enemy.
sorry dude but i didnt see a spell check button. and look guys i take back this idea ok ill just do something else

I think you'll find that in fact a lot of people use Heavy weapon support squads, the debate's over using a triple lascannon setup.Originally Posted by Thunderer

I suggest you go read a few army lists in the armylist forum, there you can see which units people tend to use and a lot of people talk about tactics there as well.
As different people discuss and make comments on the armylists, you'll get different viewpoints of the different units.
Other than that, I think you need to figure out what sort of theme you want you army to have, if its going to be a pure drop troopers army, then special weapon squads and heavy weapons platoons would be good, but for a balance army most people would probabl discard the heavy weapons platoons in favour of tanks.
In short, I think you should take the doctrins that fit your army theme.
True the heavy weapon squads are worth it for the amount of fire they can put down range... I got a little off kilter, what I meant to say was the special weapons squads. But I guess it all comes down to personal army building preference.
Thanks for the catch.
