Last night got raped by Tyranids, ALL Monsterous creatures (except 1 small unit Gaunts and 1 small Ripper unit) including one 540pt "Barbed Hirodule" .
I lost my Plasma Cannon first shot to "gets hot" rule and was told that I cannot pass the wound on to another model. So instead of a bolter going, I lost one of the VERY FEW heavy weapons that could dent his Monsterous creatures. This does not seem that fair as the rule says the weapon "gets hot" not explodes and so I thought it could be re-used when cooled down again?
Are Plasma Cannon worth 5 more points than Lascannons, and if yes against what targets?
Thanks for your help and knowledge.
PS The link for the Barded Hirodule is here http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/bhier.htm

"Here dead lie we because we did not choose to live and shame the land from which we sprung. Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose; but young men think it is, and we were young."

1: yes. If your plasma weapon gets hot and you fail the save, you have to remove the model with the plasma weapon (it blows up, the gun is destroyed, and it kills the bearer...)
2: Plasma cannons have very diffrent targets than lascannons. Lascannons are for taking out heavy tanks (and really, REALLY big bugs). Plasma cannons are for light tanks and heavy infantry (such as terminators).
So it all depends on your targets. Against the hierodule, I would use lascannons. They will kill 'fexes and tyrants too. Plasma cannons are not very effective against nids, as they don't wound as easily, and the blast isn't big enough to get many of the small creatures under it...
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
first of all, that was reallllllllllllllllly unlucky to lose him so early. 1/6 chance to over heat and then 1/3 chance to fail the armour save. I really like pasma cannons because they are great for taking out medium to heavy infantry. Even on genestealers they are worth it.
All monstrous creatures. I've heard that they are really crap. Just ignore the really big beasties, and jsut shoot the ones that can shoot you back.
in theory, simple.
For each shot, you have an average 5.5% chance of the model dying. So it was just bad luck. Oh, and I recommend you to take Lascannons instead against Nids.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
I'm not sure that I agree with Victor. I recommend you to stick with the plasma cannon. The lascannon is slightly better for killing MC's but if such a target does not present itself the lascannon is just about worthless. If you kill a gaunt it is very dead indeed but it's still just one dead. The plasma cannon is more versatile.
And you probably won't get an instakill anyways (against warriors for example) because of the hive mind.
