As I like to convert and change the basics models (and the fact that I wanna save money) I wanted to split up my HW guys. My idea is to put the HW + gunner on a cavarly base and have a regular, though modified, standing gurdsman as loader. This makes one cavalary base and one regular. Is this legal? The rules states you cannot make bases smaller BUT several other IG squads have regular small bases for their HWs. Only the Cadians (?) use the big one.
wait a minute. steel legion lascannon... steel legion heavy bolter... the are on the large bases. catachan heavy weapons. they are on large bases.
it's not jsut cadians. cadians are he ones marketed in the 4th edition codex though.
the large bases are for convenience so the heavy weapon team is always together. best thing to do if you want missile launchers is do like the missile launchers from the steel legion box. single guardsman kneeling or standing with the missile launcher. or mortar on an extra base you have lying around so you never commit a guardsman model to the mortar.
you must use the regular sized base for the guardsman who mans the heavy weapon. it is not the heavy weapon that gets attacked in assault, it is the gaurdsman. the heavy weapon itslef actually dosn't have to be on a base at all but should be. i have seen people who will put the heavy weapon on a large base with no crew and jsut place regular guardsmen on small bases onto the large base. it's about versatility so they don't always use the same heavy weapons.
I ahve an autocannon with a standing guardsman. i used two regular sized bases stuck side by side to accomodate the space needed for the tripod and gun.
bottom line is the gaurdsmen must be on at least regular sized base to be legal. the large base is just so GW could make thier plastic hvy wpn kits look better.
click the images to see some ideas.
(there is a bit of a lone autocannon you can see in the far left. there's a primed heavy bolter team customed with the crew lying down.. can't see it well )
oh.. using the cavalry base. is totally fine since it's larger than the regular base. i haven't done this because i don't have any spares.

awsome man you explained it good
And about only cadians having big bases, I dont know what I was thinking of. I do know that, though my new steel-legions arrived today so I guess I was thinking of them (small bases )
yep, he's right. Its totally cool to split the guardsmen up onto two separate *but normal sized* bases...its also tactically better, as you are able to space your men out farther than if both were mounted on the same large base.

ItĀ“s also good when they got hit by a blast marker since you donĀ“t have two models standing on the same base meaning that he has to hit both crew members to silence the gun.
DonĀ“t mess with the dicegod
