I'm trying to paint my Company "Codex Accurate" and I'm confused with Chaplains and Librarians.
The only information I've been able to find says: Chaplains have a banner with their company colours (if attached to a company). I've seen pics of chaplains all in black with their Chapter colours on their shoulders and I've seen chaplains whose armour is the same scheme as the rest of the chapter. Which is it? Does it matter?
Really you can do it however you want. But if you're going for codex accurate then I'd paint him black with the chapter colour on his shoulderpad. That's the way the ultramarines do it and they're the most codex chapter in existence.

Exactly my point, Bannus. I guess I'll do my Chaplain up in all black with a Chapter shoulder pad. I think it will be decidedly cool, especially since I am doing Mentors... white arms and legs, dark green body and helmet. My shoulder pad is going to be white with a dark green stripe down the center...Originally Posted by bannus
The codex scheme is black with the left shoulderpad in chapter colours and a skull on the right pad, but as mentioned it's more of a guideline
Originally, in the good old days fo 1st ed/RT chaplains were a mix of black plus there chapter colours, there was a WD article which is, I believe in the yellow compendium book circa late 1980s that gave the standard chaplain colours for each of the major chapters, breaking it down to leg colour, arm colour, breastplate colour, helmet colour and backpack colour, the amount of black Vs the amount of chapter standard colours varied from chapter to chapter.
2nd ed saw a more varried look, there was no proscribed amount, by the end of second ed/begining of 3rd ed, chaplains wore black , occasionally parts of their armour retained the chapter colours, this was for the following reasons:
1. recently become a chaplain, still in the process or painting
2. battle field damage forced replacement
3. Honour/relic of some sort
This realy is the status quo today
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Chaplains usually have (chaos)black armor with chapter colours and stuff on a shoulder pad.
Librarians usually wear (ultramarines)blue armor with chapter colours and stuff on a shoulder pad.
But in the end, nobody can tell you to do anything that isn't detailed in the rulebook. So if you want to do them both pink with purple polkadots - go right ahead
