My friend uses drop pods quite extensively, and there seems to be very little i can do about them. It seems the only thing i can do is cross my fingers and hope that the scatter die likes me. If he's out of charging distance i get a turn to blast him to bits, but hes in range more often than not. Is there any major weakness im missing here? Im an IG player, so i thought i would ask those of you with more experience with them. Im not asking what i specifically can do to counter them, but what weaknesses are inherent in using them. In other words, what do you find yourself hoping will NOT happen when your pods land?
scattering off the board (rare because of drop pod rules lets you drop into enemy units and terrain and lets you just move a bit to avoid being destroyed...so just drop in front of them)
okay serious now.....scattering into something that I have a bad chance at killing. In your case, unless he has a melta, don;t scatter in front of the leman russ, hardened veterans packing too much plasma, or being caught too deep behind enemy lines so that they are cut off from support.
if you are having problems killing the marines......just get more tanks with AP2. The risk of scattering into own units is worth it if you can wipe marines and drop pod out.

hey buddy, ya, YOU CANT CHARGE WHEN YOU LAND IN A DROP POD. its just like deep strike.
and especially if you play IG, this is perfect 4 u as as soon as he lands not only does he have his infantry packed together, (can u say battle cannon?) but it also means next turn you'll have a few hundred lasguns rapid firing on him.

Besides the fact that your friend is cheating, there is realativly little you can do against a proper use of drop pods-
1 or more, librarains in a termintor squad with the power fear of the darkness, will cripple any IG army.
one or two LST and this squad, will send most of your IG infantry running-
essentually, 4 AC blast your command section, which youve placed most units with the 12 rerollable moral save, those 4 AC + storm bolters, and Heavy bolters will slauther a IG command squad.
Once they are destoryed, i believe the morral of IG is 7? maybe 8? Anyway, all units withen 12 now get fear of the darknessed, (so basically your whole army) at -2 leadership, and they match off the board, of dont get far enough away from the space marines, (generally you drop pod 4 units which gives you 2 units entering second turn) And so they must fall back yet again, in the following turn, and off the board.
There is very little you can do to stop this from happenening, with out scaroficing a lot of shooting power.
But, Ghey knights seem about the best optoin to me, the opponent is now podding into some of the meanest assault troops in the game, if he ignores him, he'll lose all his termintors, and some marines. Thats not fun.
As has been said, you will always get a round of shooting on a drop podding squad before it can charge.
Aside from that it really depends what hes drop podding. Against the termie lib squad mentioned above, your bets bet is rough riders with hunting lances. The one shot lances work well against terminators and termies cost enough points to make it worthwhile.
Vehicles unfortunately fair badly against drop pods as its a little to easy to pod in and melt one down with a meltagun.
Aside from that your looking at charging dropped squads with conscripts. That or use gaunts ghosts with demo charges and plasma weaponry.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
here's a couple of thoughts.
If the drop pod lands on top of you're men. The enemy can't deploy. Make sure all good landing sites are blocked by your men. If you spread out or use a few dummy units you could make it very difficult for him to find a good landing site.
Concentration of Firepower.
It's unlikely that all drop pods will land at the same time in the same place.
Concentrate you best units in the most like spot and blast them as they land.
Choose the battleground
You should have a couple of turns to get your men into optimum position before the pods start falling.
The targets will be relatively bunched up when they disembark. A good time to use blast templates
If the enemy lands >6 inches away they will never catch up to you if you start running. Or send in a suicide squad to tie them up while the rest of the army deploys in an 18" circle around them.
Confuse the enemy.
Send a few units into his deployment zone and maybe he will divide his force or land all the pods over there.
perhaps im horribly mistaken, but i thought drop pods were open-topped. if they're not then my heart just skipped a beat and i dont think i'll have any real trouble with them anymore. even if he does pop a basilisk or leman russ with it, he's likely spent enough points to make it just about a fair trade (knowing the way he builds his squads). if they ARE able to charge, then i would like to try not changing my army completely to counter this, and i'll just have to place my units better. can someone please tell me if im right or wrong on this? i dont have any space marine codices so any help is greatly appreciated.
They are open topped, but you can never charge on the same turn that you deep strike.

thanks for that, but could you give me a page number to show a friend? he's the kind of person to doubt me unless i have concrete evidence. i dont think its in the few paragraphs in the bgb that describe deep striking. perhaps its in the respective codex entry?
