What wargear do you recommend for a Commissar in the command HQ beyond the powerfist and bolt pistol? I was thinking of carapace armour and/or a refractor field, but then I thought this might be unnecesary - he's not an independent character, so he can't be targeted (in shooting or in hth, if you use the new rules), so what's the point - the grunts in the squad can soak up casualities. Does anyone think it's worth spending a few points here, or should I leave it at the basics?
I give my Commissars a retractor field and carapace armour. Reason being when you got an intergator chaplain with 5 assault marines...well lets just say its rare that an infantry squad lasts more then 1 turn. For that reason I take retractor fields. I use the independent Commissar rule ( 3 of 'em ) and in one game I had them and my Colonel, and a vet sarg with heriofic imperialis left, and they manages to kill a Hive Tyrant, and a Celestian Superior. Needless to say the 5+I that they all had won me the game ( that and the fact that on one turn I saved 4 times ). I'm not sure if a powerfist is that great. I'd rather take a power weapon, and hit first. Besides S6 isn't gonna instant kill anybody.
I dont liek the commissar but I would have to adgree. Field, armor, and a powerweapon and maybe a plasma pistol will do a great job.

Depends.... my command squad is shooty so i just give him a storm bolter and close combat weapon.
For an assaulty commissar, powerfist, close combat weapon, refractor field, carapace armor, and maybe the medallion crimson.
First off, I don't reccommend using the commissar at all; he's just not worth the points. But if you insist, then I found a way that he can actually be useful. If you take the independant commissar doctrine and then give him a power weapon or powerfist, field, carapace armor and the Medallion. Then you put him in with a squad of 5 Ogryn and he can run in and smash things up pretty good. I only suggest this, though, if you've got lots of points to work with such as 2000+.
You can also toss a priest with an eviscerator into the Ogryn squad with the commissar and it's just plain nasty.
Commissars just add to much fluff to be not taken... but then my army is hardcore pure to the Emperor...
whats the point of giving him a stormbolter and a closecombat weapon for an assaulty commissar you shouldn't just give him 2 weapons for combat give him at least a pistol.Depends.... my command squad is shooty so i just give him a storm bolter and close combat weapon.
