Whats the best number of terminators to field per unit? 5 seems like the most common choice, but will 3 or 4 work just as well? Also, in retinues with the GM, should fewer terminators be used to compensate for the fact that the GM is super-powerful?
It just depends on how much points your playing. I try and inculde 5 or 6 in a 1500 point game but in a 2000 I have 9 with a 200 point Grand Master
9 + a 200 point Master all in one unit? That seems kind of like overkill so me.. or did you mean 9 total plus a master?
9 + a GM and 9 including the Gm are both overkill. That's well over 500 points there. All those could easily be taken by some overly accurate imperial guard ordnance. I like the terms but I think they should be split up or used sparingly to prevent the possibility of them all dying at once.
My thoughts exactly crumpet. Terms can kick enough butt in small units, especially with a grand master to assist them.
In my experience it seems three terms is too small for a squad. I encountered eight dark angel terms, two with lighting claws and lost the squad without ever being able to respond. If I had a larger squad I would have been able to respond with my own damage and at the very least weakened the angels squad. But instead, he just marched on to the next small squad of GK terms at full strength.
Four min. Five ideal.
In my 1500pt. army i field 1 GM with a retinue of 4 terminators. this will hopefully give me a good strong unit to help out who can hold their own and not ake up all my points (even if they do cost me 369pt. )
how could you not respond to dark angel terminators if you both go off at the same time?
You know what they say, if you dont like the weather in houston...go back to where you came from
Unless dark angels have higher initiative for some reason unknown to me...
you're right, I did respond, just bad rolls and I don't think I even hurt one. So I don't really remember it as a response so to speak. Which is why I would have loved to have another term or two for the second assult phase. I couldn't have had that bad of rolls twice, but all was lost.
