I was just wondering if dreadnoughts are a worthwile unit to use.
Feel free to post your opinion
Of course they are... with some conditions.
They're only AV 12 - less if they can hit the sides/rear. This means that while they're safe from almost any infantry weapons, Lascannons/Krak Missiles/whatever have a fairly easy time of punching holes in them. If they're your only major armored target, they'll draw fire like you wouldn't believe - either kill the enemy heavy weapons fast or take great care to keep your Dread out of their line of fire. (if nothing else, it's smaller than a Tank - it hides much more easily)
It's a very adaptable unit, as you can set it up for long range tankbusting, close range brawling, or mid range utility. if you can get it into combat it's nearly invincible since only troops with special equipment or massively powerful creatures can hurt it, and its S10 powerfist can easily hurt anything and everything you need it to. And of course, it still fights and shoots just as well as any normal Marine.
They can be outstanding or they can be a total waste of time. I almost always use two of them to divide the enemy fire. If you drop them in a drop pod they can destroy soft targets (assault cannon & heavy flamer) or you can get side armour shots on tanks (LasCannon Missle launcher). With the addition of Venerable and the tank hunter or furious charge skill they can be even tougher, although that does rack up the point cost considerably. Just be sure to support them, and take advantage of their ability to move and shoot. Good luck.

YES! I just got a an old metal Dread from the bottom of my brother-in-laws closet. I stripped it and made myself a venerable dread. Las and ML with tank busters....yikes that is a twin linked S10 shot. Add a drop pod......Yum. I find that my dreads are much more survivable if I drop pod them. It can give them cover and a pride a good firing lane. You can select(roughly...ugg dice gods) which side of enemy armor you'll be shooting. You could pop up near a squad of troop blaze them with the AC and flamer and hope the fools assault you. If you deep strike the options are pretty good. Footsloggin equals DEATH.
Ugh. Great thread idea. Seriously, im sure there is an ARTICLE that has opinions on dready use.Originally Posted by Elric101
Kudos for liking fma, however, dumb thread idea. You could have searched the forums, but alas.
As the title says, this thread is closed as we have a good 15 exactly like it. 3 of which I remember from the past month.

Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
