I played in a Neophyte 40K tourney over the weekend. It was for new players only, no experinced veterans could play. It was my first tourney as I have only played this game since November. I am an adult and I was playing a game against a 16 yr old kid.
I was playing ultramarines and he was playing IG. I drop-podded a librarian into his deployment zone in the 2nd turn and used Fear of the Darkness. I was using Tigurius who double the range on all his psychic abilities, so my FotD had a 24" range. I used this 2 turns in a row and he lost about 1/2 his army.
He got really mad, and said I should never use that in a tournament game, but only in friendly games. He also gave me a VERY low rating for sportmanship, when in every way I always try to be a good sport. For example, if he thinks his models should get a 4+ save from some type of cover and I thought it should be 5+, I just smile and let him have it his way.
I do this in all my games. In one game a guy deployed his ork truck badly, a veteran player who was there to assist, gave him some pointers, and I let him completely change his deployments and do it over, even though it was to my disadvantage. I am more interested in us having fun than being a stickler to the rules.
There was a kid who was let in the tourney who has played at 5 other tourneys. At the end of our game (it was a draw) he said I was the best opponent as far as sportsmanship, that he had EVER faced in a tournament game.
Was I being a bad sport by using FotD like I did?
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Short answer, no.
You don't get freebies at tournaments and that use of Tigurius is kickass. If he let you do it twice he's at fault and should have countered.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
nope...you did the right thing....he was just being a whiner for losing and my friends have suffered from that before.
I really doubt that you deserve that scroe, or are a bad sport. Unless you are the type of person that allows people to do things like that because "they need all the help they can get against someone as good as me." I doubt that. The kid was being a bad sport because things werent going his way. I think it is highly amusing to hear about a 16 year old kid acting like that, when several of the people on this forum who say they are 16 say that most people younger thatn them act immature and have tantrums over things like that. Like i said, highly amusing. Just out of curiosity what score did you give him for sportsmanship? Isn't the point of a friendly game to be friendly, and not use the most powerful things available, rather than use things that will make you win a lot and alienate your friends?
*Darn, someone beat me to it*
**Fine, 2 people beat me to it**

Alas, we cant all strive to play for fun though. You didnt do anything wrong other than doa ittle better or have some better rolls. For sportsmanship I'd say you were more than fair since Tiguris managed to get his power off twice.
It happens, we meet those players who are absolutely baffled by the fact that not everyone plays to win and they cant beat them...

To be honest, for sportsmanship I gave him full points, and the only reason I did is because he is a friend of mine and I did not want to hurt his feelings. Sportsmanship was up to 25 points. I gave him 25 and he gave me 5.
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
no offense...but that dosn't sound like a really good friend.
I think you were cool, except you shouldn't have given him a 25, especially when he ga ve you a 5. You're telli ng him that it's fine the way he plyed when it was not. You should have used that score to send him a little message to be a better sport.
sigh... i see i'm on the opposite side of the field...
firm believer that special characters should never be allowed in tournaments.... as 9 outta 10 i've seen have been well over the top in power even with their required army sizes... (there's a reason in most editions they say "with other player's consent" or the like.
overall, sounds like you were a good sport, and he was a ****,
but someone should've warned him you were using a special character that used to be optional...

What you used what completely fair. Tigurius coming in on turn 2 was not guaranteed, and it costs alot of points (and time/money to make/buy a drop pod) to do what you described.
Funny that he said you should restrict it to friendly games. I would have said the opposite. Part of the fun of tournaments is to build competetive lists and try to win with them.
Just curious... when you drop podded Tigurius in, he was with a command squad right?
