I have recently had a problem with my marines. Not army composition or anything like that but about them being so popular. Does anyone else out there decide not to collect marines or do any current space marine players out there ever want to be more unique or special and not play the army that most people play. It would be good to know what other people think about this dilemma that space marine commanders may face and how you deal with this problem.
Thanks to alll that reply.
Make your own chapter + fluff + specific attack pattern. Marines are flexible enough to be anything from close assault based to stand back and blast.
Alteratively, you could pick a much harder army to play such as ravenwing.
Once you get good with space marines, other armies will let you win much easier, proteculary edlar, tau, and orcs.
This is because all there units have a niche, and yet are flexable enough to destory most targets.
Where as space marines have no niches, and must be crafted in order to be effective against targets.
If your both playing none chapter marines, (ie both trait or ultra marines) then its really a test of whos the better commander, rather then got the better list to work with.
the thought of stopping marines has crossed my mind (blood angels are irritatingly common) but no matter what i always come back to them
im creating my own chapter, using the blood angels rules so i atleast have some individuality.
i find a good way to get around this is start a new army...play with itfor a while and see how you feel about your marines then...i have tyranids aswell and i find using them gives me a nice fresh change, before i go back to my marines with a refreshed interest...
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes
Make your SM army unique. Don't play a common chapter like the SMurfs or BA or SW......create your own with your own fluff and color scheme and traits from the codex.
for example, all veterans in my army have both of their shoulders painted Rotting Flesh and squad leaders get custom powerfists/weapons because I like converting. Give each tactical squad special markings and crusade seals to show their heraldry. Convert all major stuff like dreadnoughts and termi squads to give them more of an elite appearance.
Use alternate strategies that are not so common too. (mine is assault squad and whirlwinds raining death from above)
the SM army is flexible, craft it into anyway you like it. I find them much more fun to play if you think outside the common stuff.

Today I find yet another thread that has been covered so many times it makes my teeth hurt.
