I'm interested to see if anyone has tried playing Tau with sisters. I have yet to field my SOB's, since I'm just painting them now, but as I see it, it seems that sisters have near god-like short ranged firepower with all of the flamers, but getting into template range against Tau firepower seems like a well-nigh impossible task. Anyone here have experience?
My goal for the army I have designed and will build as soon as christmas is over. Is to get my army pretty mobile using rhinos in both hq squads all the elite squads and having 3 squads of seraphim will mainly be designed to play missions where they are going to have to move to get objectives is to use the rhinos to get me up to objectives then bail out and hold the objective and use the rhinos as cover and block line of sight while the seraphim are jumping ahead. I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to play a no mission game and just try to bash the the hell out of eachother.
Oh beleoved seraphim! Agreed with EnderUSAF get at least a large squad or two if you can. Tau are a very difficult army against the sisters, to be honest i haven't had much luck up against them. I used to use rhino's to transport them across the field but this ended up in getting them blown up. Reccently i've tried leaving my rhino's empty as they still pursue the front line as my troops follow behind moving for the side flanks. This worked pretty well for a while until the tau forces broke up and split its firepower, normally this is a good thing with the sisters as concentrated armies tend to be a pitfall but it is the tau with god like firepower and they have the ease to split fire. Tau are awrkward bastards I'm still working this one out for myself, but in theory the seraphim are your best bet, but in practice they usually die before they able to cause much damage in my history against the tau.
You know what I just thought of.... if you actuall manage to get a rhino up to thier lines you could drop the troops and lay down some flames on one squad assult them..... then take the rhino and tank rush right down the middle of squads near by... therefore making them split in half and having to move back into coherency during their turn reducing thier firing range and just keep on doing it each turn until they blow it up....... kinda funny but I wonder if it would work. I'm sure it would bug the crap out of them......... besides I havn't seen anyone tank rush ever seeing as how it doesn't doo much in the new rules....... what do you guys think... could it work.
I have played against tau on a few ocasions, but they where allways 2vs2 Missions. usually it was my sisters and my space marines (marines where played by some one else) versus Tau and something else. its that something else that hasn't given me an oportunity to really face the sisters vs tau. Chaos Dreadnaughts and Ultramarine terminators tend to get in the way of taking advantage of the tau weakness. But on the other hand my ally makes for a good distraction. From what I can tel however, sisters are still reasonably well suited versus tau. That tau may outrange sisters, but the sisters dont have that problem of trying to stay out of assault. When I face a tau army I think "FINNALLY my girls wont loose an assault, I can get as close as I want!". This is when Rhino's should kick in, if they hadn't taken rhinos from the sisters in the new chapter aproved rules. Ah well, it doesn't matter that much, as the Rhino can actually be destroyed by the tau firewarriors and their str 5 weapons. Whenever I have been able to get close enough, the sisters almost allways win. On occasion I have been lucky enough to get sisters into assault with tau, and usually that defeats them outright. the really pain in the neck are those battle suits. some of them give aditional wounds, and toughness to the tau. I am only stressing the hand to hand combat issue because it has worked for me in the past, and it makes playing the sisters of battle that much easier.
OK my Girls never had an outing against Tau, but I have watched another SoB player try it and get wasted. His biggest problem was he could not decide weather to play his siters as he would against his usual opponents (Chaos) or try and do with Sisters what he has done in the past with Chaos against Tau - Obveously neither activity is appropriate and since he was kind of stuch between the two it was a waste.
I would want a melta gun in every squad- get rid of those nasty suits
I would tool up on serephim - try and get in early to avoid dissapointment and aford the rest of the army time to get up the field
Other than that I would try and avoid vehicles - you can not get enough so why waste the points trying? - unless I can be sure of a hell of a lot of terrain - eg city fight, in which case I will be first in the queue when the new imolators come out
Mob up - you can vastly outnumber him and you can outshoot him other than the serephim dont waste points on expensive stuff, just get loads of sister and get into range and shoot, use the odd multi melta to take out the nasties (hammer heads Crisis suits etc and shoot like buggery
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I would say to take at least 2 if not 3 units of seraphim... and jump those girls right into thier fire warriors. All those guns start to add up...... then let your battle sisters run ahead and take out the rest............ without having so much fire coming down on them from the firewarriors.
Thanks for the replies, folks. Sister Mel seems to confirm my opinion that of the potential opponents, Tau are one of the ones to look out for. Perhaps I'm being a bit of an optomist, but I don't think I'll mind playing SM or CSM. Or most of the other races, for that matter. I may be unnecessarily focusing on the Tau, but then again, we have a lot of Tau players locally.
If I were to fight Tau this is probably what I would try. I would take 3 squads of Seraphim. Start them off near the middle of the table or really as close as you can get, to be between his firewarriors. Deploy them as close as you can... normally the full 12" up. Make a b-line for his firewarrior as they will probably be the most effective against your T3 girls..... sure those suits are mean.... but there are more firewarriors and they got some nasty guns and range..... now he's going to have to either concentrate on one squad meaning most likely 2 squads will make it close up in full .... or spread the fire amongst the 3 squads not doing as many casulties to each.... use some faith points for the martyr if alot of girls are going down..... and as soon as you get close enough use the passion faith to fleet of foot even close to them plus you'll be getting +2 I +1 A..... you mow those fire warriors to bits........... as soon an your done mopping them up go for the suits..... .
Maybe take an exocist or 2 and hope you get the first turn to try an take out his tanks... if not hope they last and send some melta's that way.......
I'd have 2 hq units both having celestian squads with a rhino, and maybe some elites section celestian with rhinos...... push the rhinos forward and use them to hide your battle sisters behind as you advance forward...... most likely the focus of fire will be on the rhinos though...... and the seraphim..... well thats just my .02
Heavy bolters are extremely effective against Tau- fire warriors don't get a save and they wound on a 2. A large squad of them shielded by normal sisters could get a lot of kills- four HB sisters can kill 5 a turn on average. It is an Heavy support choice, but since exorcists and immolators aren't likely to be of much use against S5 guns they might be worth taking.
I'm not suggesting outshooting tau, but combined with seraphim they might do something.
