OK, I've been building Tallarns for it seems like the past 2 years (I don't like to play with unpainted minis, and with IG, well, you see my problem). Well, I'm past the "buy every
Tallarn on ebay" stage, and have enough basic troops and heavy weapons for 4 regular squads (25 models each) and an armored fist squad, as well as HQ choices.
Buying them a I did, I didn't get much choice on what special weapons they all carry, so I'll have to bite the bullet and buy them from GW bits. So the question is: what special weapons do you recommend for "stand and shoot" IG squads which are already carrying lascannon or mortar? I've about settled on as many plasmaguns as possible, but I thought I'd ask here.
The second question is what doctrines for this mostly stand and shoot army? I guessing sharpshooters is a no-brainer, but what others? For fluff, I'm considering iron discipline, chem-enhaler (only I'll call it a stillsuit), & carapace armor. What do you all recommend?
Ah, the Fremen fanatics appear.Originally Posted by Blue Meanie

OK you want to play fremen, then probably chem inhalers, fine, I would suggest warrior weapons but tha doesnt fit with how you want to play them, Iron Discipline is always a goodie, as is sharp shooters for fire support squads. Camealeoline would be good too.
as to weaponry, firstly mortars arae pretty naff unfortunatley, that asside, I love autocannons, but special weapons..
For stand and shoot, range is good so plasma and GLs are kings, flamer is a nono and meltas are pretty naff.
As to effectiveness, againa plasma is king, it can take down both armour and MEQs, gets hot is a bot of a problem.
I quite like GLs, I know they aint popular, but they can be effective, meltas and flamers score quite highly in effectiveness, but generally are heavily neautered by range, althoughthe presence of the odd melta gun will generally discourage people from bringing vehicles to close
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I try to take as many grenade launchers as I can. After all, they are unique to IG, and when many of them are used simultanously, they can be devastating. Other than that I would say plasmaguns. Yes they may kill the bearer, but they may also unexpectedly take out that pesky falcon or that it-wont-die chaos lord.

I'll reconsider Grenade Launchers, especially as I note from the IG faq that you can't use "sharpshooters" to re-roll a 1 on a plasma gun. (Or rather, sharpshooters doesn't negate the 1; I take that to mean that if you manage to not get killed by the misfire, you can re-roll.)
Thanks, everyone for the replies; keep 'em comming.
you know i like both plasma and gernades. my commands platoons have two of each. the only thing i have to say with the doctoriens is you can not take both Iron and Cem-hinhalers. sorry
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
Sounds good, but be careful with Carapace armour. In game terms, it's really expensive very quickly. You could look at a Grenadier variants instead.
While my local group have no problem with me putting down Cadian's and saying this squad are grenadiers, from what I can gather from others on this forum, official tournaments don't allow it without evidence of conversion and at least some WYSISWG modelling on each figure.
