What do you all think? Would a powerfist in a tactical squad be worth the points? Or would it be more cost effective to have two extra marines instead?
i'd go with the powerfist personally.
TAU PLAYER - GREY KNIGHTS PLAYER - WOOD ELVES PLAYER (kind of)
"Grey Knight terminators aren't 'good.' THEY'RE F****N AWESOME!!"
Well, I would say to go for the fist. you never know what your opponent is bringing to the table and it would be nice to have something with that extra kick that a fist can bring.
And sure the two extra marines would be good for shooting, but the fist should win it's points back quicker when you get the squad into combat.
Well if you have any Anti armour firepower like a missile launcher or a Meltagun you don't really need it if however you are short on anything anti tank then i would say go for it as it will then fill a hole in your list. Also don't forget about the hiddden powerfist tactic.
Well mostly it depends who you are facing. But, in general, since 3+ save is all too common, its a good idea.
If were talking powerfist over power weapon, the answer is always a yes.
If were talking over 2 other marines, depends who you are against. For instance, against DE, the bolter shots would be better as you dont want to get into close combat with them.
Facing Marines, chaos or necrons, its a definate yes.
So long as this isnt a combat patrol mission, the ability of your hidden fist to kill your oponents IC is invaluable. Also, against any 3+ army aside from WH, it ont take long at all for the fist to make double its points. Often youll do this on the first charge.
The smaller the game, the more its about efficency. Personally I would place a powerfist in any squad that will se close combat. It gives them the ability to deal with anything they may come up against, instakill multi wound characters and models and is great at dealing with marine equivs.
I say go for it!

Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
Thanks to all that posted. I left positive reputation marks to all of you. (I figured what the heck, you took time out to respond, I could take a few seconds to leave you all reputation)
I actually have between 2500-3000 points of marines, if I figure in all of the troops that I own. Granted, I don't have a lot of vehicles, but I do have (1) rhino, (1) dread, and (2) speeders. One speeder is the new version, and the other is the oldest version that you can imagine. (yup, the 2 guys that are strapped to a big engine with no other protection) It is from way back in RT days. All those points, but I have been toying with different ideas for a 500 point force. That's what brought about the powerfist question.
I am currently trying to play with the numbers to get (2) scout squads, (1) Tac squad with Infiltrate, a Chappy, and a land speeder. (I had originally planned on a rhino for the tac squad, but I don't think that I will be able to squeeze enough points and still be where I want to be....but that's a thread for another day.
I would be tempted to make your scout squads the assault element, and the tac squad the firepower. CCW BP scouts rock, and you can kit out the sergeant with your powerfist. The tac sqaud can have a missile launcher and plasma, or assault weapons for its walk across the board. The landspeeder will rock, especially if it has the assault cannon too.

Codex Astartes: More a guideline than a rule...
if you have 2 small scout squads I suggest to go for numbers, if you are gonna make them a big one then the power fist is better!
fists are always good even in 500 points since u get S8 power attacks for marines
if your opponent comes out with a armor 11 or above walker or a T8 monster that somehow ties your marines in combat without fists u're pretty screwed
