Hello, my brother was wanting to get into the DH armies, and i was wondering myself if the Assassins are any good(mainly the Eversor assasins), or if they are worth putting in an army, i am very very new to WH and i know practically nothing of DH i will be checking out the tactica after i post this, please help THANKS!
Well, I'm of the opinion that while they can be fun for variety, none of the assassin types are as useful as a well-placed squad of infantry.
The Eversor is, out of the four Temple assassins, my favorite. He's a drug-crazed maniac who'll blow up if hit - whats not to love? He gets a LOT of attacks, has a 12" charge, and heck, he even has meltabombs!
The Callidus is most people's favorite assassin. She can be deployed anywhere on the table and excels at killing HQ/Elite models. She's the stereotypical assassin.
The Vindicare is liked by a lot of people until they do the math. Everyone likes snipers, but he ends up not earning his own points in most games. If you do use him, don't try and kill HQ/Elites. Use him to take out invisible powerfists and special/heavy weapons from squads instead.
The Culexus is just... odd. Only useful in a psyker-heavy game (and no, every GK does NOT count as a psyker for the purpose of the Culexus' rules).
Death Cultists are fun, but I'd prefer GKT any day. If you can't afford a unit of GKT, one or two DCA are a fun way to go. In small games they'll tear up. In larger games, they'll get torn up.
Assassins can be very fun to play with, and somewhat effective for the points.
Eversor: I really like him in smaller games with more room to use him. He infiltrates, so large points games can choke him out of good positions. I like him for: Counter-assault, Monstrous Creatures, vehicles and taking out enemy infiltrating shooty squads.
Callidus: She is my favorite for large point games. Make sure you remember to "Word in the ear!" I usuallty forget. She is good against smaller and weaker squads with lower leadership. Don't bother with her against Necrons, but she will do wonders against regular space marine squads, especially Devastor squads. She also affords the enemy no Invulnerable saves as well with C'Tan Phase sword. Used properly, you can almost always expect her to take out at least one of the squads she assaults. She work very nicely with Improved Comms.
Vindicare: He is good against walking armies, and shouldn't be judged on how many points he kills himself, rather it should be by what he saves. Killing the Lascannon Marine in the enemy squad may save your Landraider! Killing the Necron Lord with an Orb and Viel of Darkness would be worth many more points than he worth, because of what he can do.
Culexus: Specialty Assassin for Psykers, but some neat tricks with Grey Knights. I can't comment much as I haven't used him myself.
Whichever one you use, be very selective about who you choose to assault, eg, don't send the Eversor or Callidus into three Necron Wraiths with Initiative 6! They will lose.
My two bits.....

I myself have created a rather Assasin heavy list (1 Eversore, 6 Death Cultists) just for fun. Everything that the others have said is true but there is one more thing that hasn't really been emphasized about the assasins. They can all infiltrait and the DC may be taken in squads of three but for game purposes they are considered independant.
This means that you can put a whole lot of dangerous individual units right on the enemies doorstep and force him to chose whether to start targeting the assasins (wasting a whole squads fire just to kill one) or ignoring them and on turn two, having vital units tied up in CC. A couple of assasins can be vital in throwing a wrench into the gears of the enemy. I wouldn't recomend using a lot of them but in moderation they can do things for the DH that no other units can.
The only honorable options left to we combatants is seppuku or semantics...which amount to the same thing really.
Diggums on the Vindicare i hole heartedly agree on you. Many a times i shake off thake Space Marine punch, but when the powerfist comes out: that guy way more over his points! Killing lascannon/sarges with the Hellfire round is just a good combo...for a powerfist sargeant he kills around approx 75pts and thus saves around 2 Grey Knights ( even better if those GKs are Termies)
The Eversor is great. I believe the correct formula for an Eversor assassin is Fonzy + Free Money x New Car Smell = Eversor Assassin. Mine either kills heavy weapon squads or moves up with the GKs to add a bit of insanity to the CC proceedings.
The Callidus is another good one; WIYE is useful as all get-out, as is the Polymorphine thing. All I ever use mine for is to support my GM retinue when they land or to pin squads so they can be charged, which is where Jump Back comes in . She can't take out squads on her own like the Eversor can, but as a supporting model she's second to none.
The Vindicare is the one I started off using because he looked cool. Then I realised he only gets one of each type of special shot per game and is generally a bit poo unless you're facing an army split into a few big squads that each contain 1 or 2 important models. He's basically a sniper Scout with a few extra rules, not really worth the points if I'm honest. The Culexus just sounds rubbish; how many people have enough psykers in their list to make him worth using? DCAs I never tried, I've got 2 but they just seem like weedy GKTs to me; and since I run a GM retinue I'd rather just stump up the 12 points for 2 more Termies .
I have eversor and vindicare..people think that vindicare is harmless, untill i kile their powerfist sergeants and charge that ******** squad with a dreadnoguht!
I got 6=2-3 attacks..(i forgot exactly how many) against some tau battlesuits...POWN SAUCED!
If you field grey knights, dont bother with the death cults... Callidus is supposed to be good.. I dont know... she might be... as for the psyker brainer one...i have no idea!
hope i helped..
The Vidicare drednought combo is great, alwell as the vindicare termie squad; You just eliminate the power fist and then you trounce the squad with 2+ saves. I also love the eversor, he is awesome, and difficult to use as he is not tough to kill, and all by himself. The Callidus I think is too good, and even cheap if used correctly (but that is really only against 3+ save armies. If you are fighting orks, or eldar she wont get her points back because she doesn't get that many atttacks, and her AP 1 flamer doesn't really kill enough low cost models to get back her whopping cost.
I say try them out, they are fun to use and if used right pay off huge. I just bought the eversor and have been proxing him out as the callidus (and asked about it I let me friends know that if I bought a callidus I would use it ever game just to make it worth my while, that quiets them right down because they would rather me take the eversor 2/3rds the time than the callidus everyfight.

But still don0t underestimate the power of an assassin in large games people, since they don't cost much, you could have a lot of distracting thing lying around
