Hey guys, I played a game with basic IG yesterday. Now I ONLY got into IG after reading the options for the Last Chancers and deciding to create my own charactes, (Just Personal looking Guardsmen vets, using the last chancers stat line and options, nothing that i made up). because I LOVE creating characters in the Modeling and Converting aspect. I play normally, Necrons, CSM, WOrld Eaters and Ultra marines. So these are all a pain for a new IG player, with not much int he heavy weapons department. I envisioned this core of mine, (Byt he way the Guard are Cadian remnants fromt eh Eye of terror, I used Cadian, Catachan, and Warhammer Fantasy Marauder plastics with odd SM and CSM bits tossed inf or my regiment). These were veterans of the Eye of terror so they saw HUGE amounts of combat against power armored foes. Some will see where this is going. So my twenty Named "Ghosts"(Last Chancers) With Colonel Watchell and Lieutenant Sharma (Schaffer and Kage) all got modeled with Plasma guns and a few meltas. Some will call this chesse, but they are all BS of 4 which is good. But cna fry and a 1/2 to hit rolll rapid firing and have crap armor to save it. So I don't mind, being as how int he theme of my army I use no Leman Russ/Baslilisks.
Well long story short, a IG buddy of mine played a team game against some Night Lords and Khorne World Eaters. Anyway, Turn two, they are charging at us...One unit of Raptos was gunned down by 8 of my last Chancer/Ghosts, annihilated. Then a Full unit of Berserkers was destroyed..and not a single Misfire or death!
Turn 3: Anotehr Rapto unit loses 7 of it's ten raptors and my plasma gunners now destroy the Defiler of the Night Lords. Still no losses.
Turn 5: No losses yet on the ghosts. Both Chaos HQ's a Lord with Jetpack (NL) and Daemon Prince (WE) Tear into our lines. After wasting the front line guards they ar eunable to Sweeping advance...
Turn 6: The ghosts Surround them in cover and the wreckage of two chimeras and ERADICATE both HQ's. With get this, through the WHOLE game ZERO caqsualties! it was great, I HIGHLY recommend others using the LAst Chancers rules for their own crazy cool squads. Share ideas for them with me? :-D
Amazing... but how do they fare without an ally's line squads there to take the heat?
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
im thinkin pure luck, ive never used last chancers but by the looks of the rules they are far too over priced for what they are
Where there's a will there's a weapon
I have to agree with Abraham Lincoln on this one... I find it HIGHLY doubtful that no casualties were taken. Being a guard player myself, I don't think it's possible to lose no models at all. Your ally must have been playing meat shield (if he wasn't, please tell me what you did to not lose any men), in which case there probably were casualties. While I am quite intrigued by the possible uses of the Last Chancers (thanks to giving me a reason to revisit that section of the rules ), I have to say that a completely Last Chancer force would leave you painfully short on models to absorb fire and assaults. It couldn't have been a very fun game for your ally. Not to mention, the chaos forces must not have been very balanced themselves. Whenever I play, I would have had Defiler rounds randomly plunking into my lines. Unless you DS'ed them in right next to that Defiler, and your opponents left their Defiler completely unguarded (knowing there were units held in reserve), this would be an unlikely outcome. With those powerhouse infantry units sitting around the board, the chaos opponent (or, anybody with ordinance, for that matter) would have been hard pressed to find a more point intensive unit to concentrate fire upon. From the sound of it, your LC squads would have cost almost as much as a tank, and with no need to roll for armor penetration, actually would have been a preferred target.
All in all, I'm impressed with how well they did and for the fact that I never noticed their inherent tactical abilities before... however, I somehow doubt the plausibility of an entire LC force, or an IG force that lost no casualties. Sure, you may not have lost your guys, but your ally had to have lost men.
Nah, it's quite possible to lose no men. Most commonly happens to me when we play a 2 on 2 cleanse mission and my ally is Khorne.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
Lemme clarify lol, no I DID lose lots of line guardsmen, I meant no Last Chancers Casualities. Which I thougth was amazing due tot heri all using palsma guns. And I wasn't sayign ti was tactical genius either lol, It was good rolling ont he over eat. And you can't ahve a full LC force, can only take up t twenty.
Actually you can so long as you only use last chancers. You can meet the mandatory HQ and Troops slots.

Depends on how friendly the game is. The Command Squad is a 1, not a 0-1, not a 1+, but a 1. This means you need to take, at very least, the command squad. Support squads are at your disgression. Schaeffer counts as an HQ, but not a Command Squad; he's a special character. Just the same as you can't take just Gaunt as your only HQ choice, or Yarrik, or Creed. If your opponent is fine with this, then go nuts. If it were me, I wouldn't care.Originally Posted by Triumph Of Man
Of course, in a combat patrol mission, this is a moot point.
I think the simple thing that happened here was that you got really lucky dice rolls (with some 100 dice rolls maybe, you would normally have got 1/6 ones. you probably did, but saved them, which still means a few deaths throughout the game) and had a line of troops, mainly your ally's, to soak up fire and keep them in one place to plasma the hell out of them after they had finished with cc. The comment has already been made about barrage weapons, and I agree totally. They are a fragile high cost unit with low armour (not that many large ordnance weapons allow it) and low toughness. The exact opposite could have happened, with a huge number of casualties from getting hot. another thing that would work against would be a suicide anti infantry squad to deepstrike or some heavy bolter/similar weapon teams(basically longer range) so that you would have a few turns to come within firing range of the plasma guns. A shooty army would have "pwnd" you.
