I've nearly completed my 1500 pt Deathwing army, and I'm looking around for a suitable librarian mini to lead it. All I have is a crappy old (back in the space hulk days) one and he doesn't match my nice new plastic termies and dreads. In fact, he looks a little on the short side by comparison. Any suggestions for a decent mini that matches the new termies?
Well, there is a great model here but it will not be avalibel for a while, and it is very costly! You could convert a plastic termie with some weapons, bits, and a cut up shoulder pad. Or you could use this GW model. And there is always another choice, but i can't think of one at the moment.
Hope this helps.
There are plenty of new-terminator-sized models available from GW that you can use for your own characters. I used marneus calgar's torso and legs for my deathwing commander (gave him sword of secrets ad thunderhammer).
My suggestion is to buy a grey knight blister and convert it a bit. Maybe drill out the head, add a plastic one, and green stuff a hood on it.
In WD 311, there is an outstanding conversion for a Deathwing librarian from the lysander model. It uses the lysander torso, Captain stern's sword, a combi-melta and some green stuff.
If your entire army is made up from the new plastic ones, don't look around for an old. Just like you said they are smaller and you cannot have a small HQ, it would look very out of place.
So I guess you'd have to convert a Librarian. Get him some books, like THIS and a nice looking force weapon like THIS ( the guard's sword if you scroll down a bit).
Make a Psychic hood from an old shoulder pad - I think that's the most common way and add some Greenstuff robes.
I use a Grey Knight termie for my Librarian HQ. The halberd makes a wonderful looking force weapon and with a few extra plastic purity seals really looks like it will deal out the business. The only thing I needed to change on the model was replace the psycannon's single-barrel muzzle for a twin-muzzle from a spare plastic stormbolter. But I believe you can get GK Termies with stormbolters in the first place to save you the work. As an added bonus too there is a small panel of armour rising from behind the helmet which looks like a mini psychic hood. Again one could make a bigger version if you felt inclined, but once painted regal blue he will look like a Librarian anyway.
The model I use even has a book modelled onto his left hip. You might want to fill in the Inquisition-type filigreed shoulder pads - but I didn't - I like the decorated look the armour has. Also you will need to file off the emblem on the left shoulder pad - again I didn't (it's a small book after all).
The Grey Knight termies are quite dynamically posed, and size-wise they sit well with the plastic termies. The fact that their helmets are different from other termies is neither here nor there, just makes him stand out as being different/elite/hq etc.
The next project now is a GK Termie Captain with sword to use as my Grand Master.

My thanks for all the advice. Havn't sorted through all the links yet but I suspect I'll order up some bits and convert a plastic termie. I've still to buy my last box of termies anyway, and with a 4 man retinue that will give me one left over for converting. My bro has GK, so I'll see how they size up. Anyplace I can obtain that WD article online ezekiel?
Now for the drop pod project....
EDIT: All above posters repped
EDIT 2: After checking out the helpful links, I'm tempted to go with lysanders body and some GK bits for the arms. An HQ deserves a better job than just a sarge with an old shoulder pad stuck on his head. I'll transfer this to the conversions forum.

Everything you have been told is a lie!
That'll be the one in your avatar then. Converted? Looks very pro.
Another IMB reader I see. What part of SW England?
