    Command Squad

I'm wondering what people think about specialists in command squads. Is it worth the points ore is it better to just have marines with bolters ore BP/CCW?

That all depends on the squads purpose. In general however, as command squads tends to focus on close combat, the apothecary and standard bearer arent worth the points they cost unless you plan on giving them additional equipement. However, this causes command squads to be exceedingly expensive.

Personally I find the champion a great addition to a close combat command squad and of course the mandatory sergeant with powerfist. Aside from that though little else is necessary.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.

Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:

    1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant

    2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers

    3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC

the apothecary can be pretty nasty against IG. because of that one marine that would die is saved by the apothecary.

The company champion is a really great addition to a command squad and boost their potential to the limit. With an Sergeant and Chaplin they are close to uber CC unit.

For the rest I haven't tried them but Rogue-angel uses the command squad quite abit with all the possibilities available.

champ's quality, apothecary is quality but expensive, standard bearer is pretty much just too 'spensive. I play DA, and the only standards I feel are 'worth' taking are iconic (Devastation or Retribution for those familiar)...but thats 35 or 40 extra points! enough for 4 or 5 marines in his stead. So, that being said, he's been ridin' pine in my army lately, and I haven't regretted it. The champs a bargain if you ask me, and the apothecary...well, you can look at it two ways:3 marines cost the same as he does, but if yo uhave to cross any stretch of open ground on foot (a.k.a. your transport gets popped) then he'll probably save you 2 or 3 marines...plus he's a cool model, and fluff wise he's hard to deny.

You know I like the Apothecary in CC sqauds. Even though he can't use his abilities in CC, I find that after they disembark they will suffer some casualties when running twords the enemy. And the Apothecary IMO makes his points value back...easily.

I'm flattered you thought about me

indeed I have been experimenting with all the options the command squad has in terms of characters, and I find the following to be a very nasty squad:

Captain with powerweapon and stuff (sword of secrets if you play DA)
    chaplain
8 man CC command squad with:
    champion
    vet. sarge with Powerfist
    2x meltagun
    infiltrate
    OR
    furious assult + drop-pod

I often run a second chaplain to lead an assult squad to aid in the charge; these two units combined wreak havoc on almost any army. I have literally obliterated IG with this, nearly bested Black Templars in close combat (if it wasn't for my crap dice-rolls), sliced countless orcs, and had good results against a few others as well...

I personally don't take the Apothecary because my command squad tends to either be Fearless (Chaplain) or Stubborn (Master). But however I do like to take a Standard Bearer with a Sacred Standard for the sake of the extra attacks in case I become charged. This however makes for a 65 point non-IC. A little pricey but not bad in the long run.

sorry, i thought the sword of secerts was grand master only, maybe i miss read but im pretty sure thats what it said

I tend to run a pretty expensive command squad,

    - Chappy - 6 CC marines
    - Company champ
    - Sarge w/ powerfist

I send them off in a rhino (i might upgrade em to a LRC and drop a few members). What ever these guys hit is immidiatly hit by the nearby libarian led assault squad. Nothing really gets out alive and they preform well on their own aswell ^_^

I does, in fact, say this in the DA Codex, but with the FAQ from the GW website, you have to use the Master profile in the SM Codex.

Which leads to another question, can the Captain take the Sword of Secrets.
