hey my friend can't decid on an army and he has narrowed it down to 2 choices necrons and marines and was wondering if any one could tell him why he should do marines
Your friend should take the Space Marines because they can shoot as well as Necrons, have the same armor, and are twice to two and a half times as fast. Space Marines can take upgrades unlike the Necrons. Space Marines are slightly cheaper. Ultimately, Marines are also more varied. Sure, Necrons can get "We'll Be Back," but unlike Marines, Necrons are forced to phase out at below 25% army strength. At our local tourney place, we have rules regarding mission objectives, I have been able to fulfill several objectives with only one or two half squads left.
Exceedingly durable (save + T + we'll be back)
Have some very fast and valuable units
The monolith is so gnarly^_^!
Relies heavily on troops due to phase out
main army is fairly slow (unless you use the monolith, special units may be fast but the main body will be moving "^ at a time due to lack of transport).
Expensive point wise
Very well balanced to suit almost any playing style.
They are NOT invincible, in fact they are much more vulnerable than most people realise. Trust me, even with the nice 3+ if you're hit by 5 wounds you're bound to lose someone.
As soon as marines hit the board an army of Ap3 weapons are drawn from across the board:sleep:. Some clever tactics should be able to overcome this though.

Personally, I'd say space marines just because I think the necron army is really limited in the amount of different units.
What I mean is, models and stuff. I know they're really well balanced as an army, there just isn't enough variety for me personally.

For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
I think Necrons are better to just get into the game and play occasionally, quick to paint, and simple enough codex. But they don't have as much room to build on as space marines because of the limited troop choices, so if you want an army you can play and add on for a long time, SM are the way to go. They are both good starter armies. Necrons are much more expensive also.
I started out space marines, a friend of mine who I got interested in the game chose Necrons. He's collected all the models now cause he is really creative with his army lists. He's now realizing a good chunk of the units are pretty much useless. He's about to table his necrons till they update the codex (way down the road we figure) to make it worth taking the harder to use models (Pariah, tomb spyders, etc.). He's feeling he has to choose one of the standard necron army lists out there because of the power balancing involved has kinda nerfed specific units. When he gets the cash he'll be switching to Sisters of Battle.
Necrons are good for starting out though and I think they look cool.
"The internet perceives censorship as damage, and routes around it."
i would go necron. u just cant beat the basic warrior. expensive sorta but well be back and gauss weapons. and just as good in close combat as marines except int. Destroyers are also a big plus. But if you want your freind to play space marine tell him much more variety and versatile
It's really a matter of opinion. Just tell him to get what he think looks the coolest, and he should be happy. Both armies can be used effectivley, and are very balanced.
I think you can better start SM because of the varied units. In a SM list you can put almost every unit type in and that way you learn WH40K alot more faster.
Also Marines are so balanced you can do everything with them. This means they are a great standard when you want to get a more specialeced army.
With necrons the only way you can play them is shooty. So you will never know if you like an assault based army over a shooty one.
Don´t mess with the dicegod
Tell ure friend these things:
1.marines have same stats as necros
2.necros lose if 25% of their army dies (which seriously sucks!)
3. even though necros have the "we'll be back!" special rule, marines have a large arsenal of heavy weaponry. so marines can blow necros to bits.
4.marines have a much larger variety of miniatures than necrons, so u can adapt to more syles of play.
5. necros are hell expensive points wise. 18pts per reg. infantry!!!!
hope this helps!
