I recently got my first game in against nids. I went with a tactical-squad heavy army, maximizing bolters and holding onto enough PF's and assault specialists to counter-assault effectively. 4 of my tacticals had plasma guns, and I didn't take flamers at all b/c I had 2 AC tornadoes, a Predator with HB sponsons, and whirlie support with mines. I figure I had my anti-horde covered.
Turned out to be right. The plasma guns in the tactical squads and 3 pp on my assault squad proved to be the way to go. I mowed hordes quite efficiently with bolters and the other stuff. But the carnies and tyrant proved tough. I didn't really target them until they got close b/c the firepower economy favored nailing the small gribblies and stealers. Anyhow, a turn out of charge range, I brought down the carnie with the combined firepower of 5 tactical squads (1 MG, 1 LC, 4 PG, lots of HB/bolters). This was a T7 2+ save carnie with 5 wounds. I had just enough plasma to bring it down, and had 3 pp on the assault squad left over to go after the tyrant...
didn't quite work out as I had planned once I got charged... LOL
But managing one TMC in cc was doable when the rest of his army was thinned out significantly. My point is, if you play against nids, I think plasma is the way to go.
As a Tyranid player I have to tell you that he's list was very weak. He had Bonesword and Lashwhip + Venom Cannon. YOU NEVER MIX CC upg WITH SHOOTY ones! At the fex is the same problem. I saw he had 3 Lictors ... that's 240 points ... WASTED! one is enough to get the things done.
There are 2 posibilities:
1. You are fighting a TMC list => plasma/lascannon all the way !
2. You are fighting a Horde list => flamers , believe me , these things scare even the veteran players.
I'd have to agree with holo. I once went up against nids with my deathwing (poor choise, I know). I managed to whittle down the smalled bugs in no time, but I didn't have the firepower to take the big ones, so they mangled me in a turn or two...
So flamers / mass bolters against horde, and big guns against big bugs...

against hording Nids I take my 13th company.
What people say when they know how much these guys costs and my vastly outnumbered self.
I welcome to say them I have 2 units of Long Fangs (same as devastators but then with options to assault weapons) equipped fully with flamers.
PS> Always take a Thunder Hammers over Powerfist against a Monstrous Creature.
In my experence I'd say plasma as well, I've rarly seen a situation where a marine player's tactical squads can move into range with a flamer and shoot, they are usually charged by Hormaguants from 12'' so the genestealers can just move into combat without risking getting flamed.
PS: Nice painting in that pic.

I recently played against Tyranids, and went flamer heavy. Took cleanse and purify so I could throw two per squad in. I didn't fire a single one of the flamers for the entire game. Now this may be due to tactical ineptitude (is that a word?) on my part, but I have to say if I had plasma or even just bolters instead of flamers, they would have worked out better for that situation.

Wulfbanes, now I haven't seen the 13th Company list, so it may be different, and if so then please disregard this message. If, however, their Long Fangs are the same as those from the Space Wolf Codex, then only your pack leader may replace his bold pistol and CCW with a flamer. Each of the other Long Fangs must be armed with one of the heavy weapons (SW codex page 12).Originally Posted by Wulfbanes
Just thought I should point that out.
