can i ask why do bikes suck so much they can't take squat on or am i playing them wrong?
Bikes... Bikes are expensive but they definately don't suck. you get the benefits of toughness 5, you can turboboost 24" and gain an invulnerable save, you can arm them with plasma or melta weapons to take out armor, they just have to be used for their ideal purposes, quick surgical strikes and lightning raids in and out of enemy space, or used as rapid flanking troops to bring down fire from multiple directions. However... they are not Land Raiders, they do blow up fairly easily and you need to utilize cover and concealment to your best advantage with them.
you are most definatley playing them wrong, bikes dont suck, they can take on most stuff
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I like sticking 2 Meltaguns in every Bike squad, makes them a threat to tanks and troops alike. With the Bike Mounted Bolters and Meltaguns hitting a small elite unit can be devastinging for your enemy.
Maybe not the best line troops, but bikes work well flanking and rushing forward.
First, use more than once senteance instead of lobbing all of them together in one giant line...
Second, the effectiveness of bikes depends solely upon what your army is supposed to do. (and how good the given player of the army is but thats a bit different.)
In an army built for shooting the enemy from afar, bikes make good for speeding ahead and capturing or contesting objectives; while in an army built around speed and assault they can help by adding in a fair ranged punch.

Bikes don't come cheap, but they are effective in decent numbers.
DO NOT TAKE THEM IN MINIMUM SIZED UNITS! Always take at least mid sized squads of bikes.
Also if you can put a character on a bike to go with them, as i play SW, i take a wolf priest on a bike as i give him healing balms and potions to re-roll their first failed armour save. I suggest you take something similar.
DO NOT send them into the enemy by themselves, ahve something that can back them up. I find a Landspeeder Tornado and bikes make a good combination, and it also forces the enemy to prioritise which to shoot at first, the LST with HB and AC or the bikes which can rapid fire their bolters (OR fire their specialised guns) and assault if in range.
Hug cover, as has already been mentioned, and hit and fade tactics are great, whilst your troops get into better positions for either shooting or assaulting.
These tactics work for me, but each to their own, unfortunately it's a case of suck it and see. When things dont work, adapt it next time, and if it does work try it again to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
Bikes are good, but only brilliant in a good commanders hands.
Space Wolves are badasses that operate just barely within the rules.
13th Co. didn't even know there were rules applying to how badass they could be.
... and Daemonhunters make it three - now just need a spare room to store it all!!!
