is there any point in taking sentinals over heavy weapon squads as they are not that different, and the hvy weapon team costs less
also leman russ or demolisher???
i would definitly say heavy weapon squads are better. you can hide these behind ranks of soldiers and have them survive a long time. Sentinals get blown apart immediatly due to the fact that they have armor.
(1 lascannon shot automatically glances!
and i would also say that the leman russ battle tank is better than the demolisher because of its versitility. the demolisher is a wonderful tank, especially against marines or necrons, but the leman russ will cover your @$$ alot better with its 76 inch range.
I agree that the Leman Russ is better then the demolisher. Last game I had, it was on the edge of the board, keeping the enemy from taking that edge, then fired about 60 inch's to the other side and killed 9 out of 10 bunched up marines... If you can find a fireing lane for the sucker, it can limit your opponent in where to move. The demolisher or whatever the marine varient is never does any good against me. Even though the marine version has weaker armour ( 13/11/10 ) , it gets so close that I can bring all my weapons on it ( plasma guns from 4 sections ). Plus terrain basically bottlenecks the tank, so you can set up for it.
I dont know too much about imperial guard, but I would have to guess that if the sentinel could have more than one weapon it might be worth it. Then you could move and fire all of your weapons because you are a walker. It may also be usefull if you have filled all of your heavy weapons teams and need just one more big gun. Do sentinals take up heavy support options, or fast attack? can they deploy in squads like the space marine landspeader?
the sentinels are pretty weak with armour and guns, and IG needs all the heavy weapons they can get, i would say hvy weps squads would be the best choice

Heavy weapons squads are infinitely more useful than Sentinels, however, I usually use both in my 1850 point army. You just can't beat Sentinels for mobility in an IG army and sometimes you really need all the movement that you can get.
However, if you have points for only one or the other, then Heavy Weapons are much betters.
Yes, take the Leman Russ first. It's very very handy to have.
sentinels can be kinda useful for those armies that haven't taken the doctrine for heavy weapons teams (though that can be gotten around by attaching them to the command squad) or in situations where you need mobile firepower. They can be extremely deadly vs. orks if you outfit them with Heavy Flamers, as it is actually impossible for an ork to harm them.
A "Boyz" squad with some big shootas should make short work of a Sentinel. I believe even when taking them as part of the HQ group, you still need to have the doctrine. Im not sure about that but in army builder it says I need to have the special weapon squad doctrine..
The armeggedon pattern sentinal has excellant armour hunting abilities; on several occasion I've seen transports drop their crew off too early thanks to a set of sentinals with lascannons flanking them. Also, having a 3x multi-lasers open up on anything is great, being able to pin helps. I've used sentinals for taking objectives on several occasion, then covering them with an artillary barrage until the rest of the force moves up. Heavy weapon on the other hand pretty much tell the enemy that your squad is going to sit-tight and shoot. What ever, I like them bolth.
*Fart* "Keep talking sir, we'll find you!"
NOTHING AUTOMATICALLY GLANCES.
even though a sentiel has weak armor you still have to roll and a one is an automatic failure regardless.
