Someone help me out here, I'm failing to see when a combat shield will be of use when equipped on a vet. sgt. or company champ.
The way I see it, if you're hit with something that negates armor, you probably want to have the hit taken by one of your meat shields and not risk your PF Sgt. If you're squad has been whittled down to the point that the Sgt. has to take the hit, then the unit is pretty much screwed anyway and the 5 pts. would be better off elsewhere.
Now I haven't actually used one before, so what do you all think? Do you get you're points out of them?
A uber command squad with the company champion in, and a vt sarge with power weapon, bp and combat shield can be harder than you think.
Just because the save is pants doesn't meean it is, it would rather be able to make a save than not, even if it is 5+
Also, unlike its bigger brother the storm shield it doesn't take up a weapon 'slot' so you can get the +1 attack for weapon in each hand.
Its also a bargain for 5 pts, it all depends what squad its in.
In an assault squad its definately worth its points but there is no point taking it in a tactical squad.
Well, consider: your squad has 3 men plus PF Sergeant left, and gets into combat with a Commander/Chappie/Librarian.
Since these characters never take to the field without at least a power weapon, and they usually make it count, you'll probably take 3-4 wounds. This kills off the troopers, but you've still got the 5+ on the Sgt.
Assume he makes it - if not, 5 points wasted... if he does, you get to take your shots with the Powerfist - and if your opponent fails even one of his (probably) 4+ saves..... SPLAT! Bye-bye character. :w00t:
So no, if you're trying to fend off a large number of power weapon hits, you're still screwed either way. If you've just gotta fend off one or two, you stand at least some chance of getting in a few more swings with the PF. Basically it's a cheap way of buying a little time where you wouldn't have survived normally.
Are You kidding me! Combat sheilds are useful mate, and for only 5 points, they are a dead set bargain!
They are very handy to have and yeah they might not provide the best invulnerable save, but atleat you have one right, and if you do pass it then your serg or champ will have the chance to dish out more attacks.
Very nice in my opinion, and i have seen them being used many times, and not by some new kids that dont know what they are doing, by players who know the game.
I think you better reconsider the ol' combat sheild
I find them useful on my biker sergeants. When I use a biker chaplain that bike squad is often reduced to just the chaplain and the sergeant. Considering how much he costs with honors and a fist, the misly ammount of points the combat shield costs is well worth it.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
