The vast bulk of my army are Cadian plastics, with a hefty supply of tanks. However I also have an infantry platoon of Praetorian Guard and some additional heavy weapons for them. These however usually don't see that much sunlight, as I don't have enough to use them singly. With the new Vostroyans though I'm very tempted to get some and here was my idea...to turn my force into a inter-planetary army of several regiments. To greater enhance the fluff I would do the following:
1.) Mechanize the Praetorians. My Chimeras and Hellhound would be painted a desert scheme and I would primarily use them for Armored Fist squads. I could also use what was their platoon command unit to make a mobile HQ unit that would move with the Armored Fists and supplement them with melee abilities. My remaining heavy weapons could be taken as support squads and support their advance.
2.) Make the Vostroyans my siege regiment. All of my seige tanks (Basilisk, Griffon and Demolisher) would be painted with their heraldry. Also the Infantry Platoon would have utilize lascannon/plasma gun setups and the command squad would be plasma guns/medic setup.
3.) My Cadians would be the jack of all trades. I would use their scheme on my Russes and Sentinels and their infantry would compromise a mixture of light and heavy weaponry. They would also form my Stormtroopers and Grenadiers.
So what do you think? Do you like the concept of multiple regiment types in one army or to keep things pure?
too many colourschemes usually make an army look uncoherant, but if you just use something to tie them together (like same coloured cloth, or something like that), i could see it work..
and there would be the benefit that you dont need to paint 75 minis that look the same, only 25 figures that look alike, of each.. actually, i really like your idea
Reminds me of the 'On the Trail of a Tyrant' WD article where different squads got different traits but the same disadvantages...
If it is for friendly games, it seems OK. But normally Mech needs to be taken overall so a hardcore rule fanatic might just burn you at the stake...
Or, he could just use Armored fist squads for the praetorians, without actually taking the mechanized doctrine.Originally Posted by Imperialis_Dominatus
I like the idea too. I kind of have a similar theme in my army, which is 50% composed of cadians in green fatigues, and the other 50% is conscripts... I use catachan models, but paint their rags brown and black so they just look like raggedy proles.
It helps keep everything organized, and makes storage easier, too. I like your theme, it will make for developing good fluff mid-game, as you watch each individual arm perform in the field.

My army consists of both cadian and steel legionnaire models. The cadians make up the bulk of the forces, and the steel legionnaires are my armored fists. Something about those legionnaires hopping out of the back of a chimera is much more satisfying. My fluff behind this is that the army consists of the armed forces of the planet and its moon, both of which have differing military philosophy and uniform; but the same color palette is used across all models to maintain a coherent look.
Maybe I'll have to add another moon, though, as those Vostroyan models are starting to grow on me. :w00t:
Hey Rogue, why don't you just write some fluff saying that the Vostroyan units are those from the arctic/prison side of the planet and they're the Conscripts...Originally Posted by RogueLDR0
But I like this idea, granted mine's all Cadian's but I might add a unit or two to do something special.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!

Personally Darguth I think the idea of having all the different regiments having different specialties is a really cool idea. I think even with differing color schemes it could be really cool. The thought of the Pratorian Armored Fists, the Vostroyan Heavy Weapons and Siege Machines, and the Cadian Infantry and Battle Tanks is a really nice idea.
