I'm Starting My IGs. I want them to be elite. I do no like the idea of throwing men at the enemy like a foolish child. so i was thinking
Hardned fighters or Xeno-fighters (what ever works that battle)
Ratlings or Techpriest (havn't decided yet)
Just a general with commisoners
Vets with the works
Ratling or techpriets
2 Platoons 2-3 squad per one.
theres 3 types of troops all with a purpose
Infantry guardsmen for CC
Karskins for Tough AP
Vets for Speaicl weapon squad.
what do you think?
I like it. I use similar doctrines, although I would lose the ratlings/techpriests and get the "Hardened Vets" doctrine instead. I think the biggest problem with elite IG is squeezing in enough heavy weapons... I usually have some Grenadiers for my troops, with plasma, and also slip in a platoon or 2 of regular's, with lots of heavy weapons, and the use vet's as my elite's with whatever additional heavy weapons I need to win. (I'm big on HW's)
Also, the camo and sharpshooters is an excellent combination. Take an Anti-Tank Squad with 3 lascannons, sharpshooters, cameolelalinaliline, deploy them in some good cover at the start of the game, and watch your opponent curse them as they rip through his armor, avoiding all casualties due to their 3+ invulnerable saves!
Oh, one thing... you have your "regular guardsmen for cc"... this is a big no-no. A lesson that I have learned time and again is, if a single assaulty unit makes it to your lines, you are in BIG trouble. Unless you have conscripts, these guys are sick at disposing of cc units... but as a rule of thumb, a good IG general will be able to gun down 99% of his enemies without even needing to engage in cc (excvept maybe for an unlucky scrificial squad)
Thus, I would use the regular's for heavy weapons platforms instead.
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts

If you let a True CC unit get into your lines you've lost the game.
Take a look at Dark/Light Eldar CC units not to mention Orks and Nids and then ask if you can stand up to that.
If you want an "elite" force, I'd take Vets and Grenadiers as starting point. That alone lets you take 6 elite choices in your army. Maybe even Carapace Armour as another as its +20 points per unit so that works out to 2 points per unit but cheaper than carapace armour as wargear.
Sharpshooters is another way to make your army more "elite" as well as adding Fire Support and Anti-Tank sqauds to your HQ platoon. if you want a shooty army you gotta have the true damage dealers of a IG army and thats its HWs.
With 3 Vets squads and 3 Stormtrooper Squads all tricked out thats easily in the neighboorhood of 650 points on 6 squads which is insanely expensive for IG,
Add in sharpshooters on your FS/AT squads things get pricy in a hurry.
Not to mention how pricey Commies can get if you pile gear on them (450 points possible)
LoL if you dont want to lose guys than dont play Imp. Guard...thats their entire point of existence.
In my opinion Elite Guard don't work too well. You get all these shiney units, but you lose out on having hordes of bodies to shove down your opponents barrel.
If you want a more elite guard while still saving on points though, you could take sharpshooters and put it on all you line squad, boosting your chance to hit. Or take Veterans and max out your 3 Hardened Vet squads and only take compulsary platoons to provide a meat shield.
Whatever works that battle? You are aware than Xeno-fighters has to be modelled showing what race of xeno your men are experienced fighting?Originally Posted by Bladeweaver

You are; Empire (truly)
You are 63% Honorable, 47% Bloodthirsty, 37% Magic-minded, and 85% tactically-oriented!
Aside from the horric spelling of everything (Emperor forgive him for trying) You've got it all wrong. You don't just throw your guardsmen at the enemy ever, ther are tactics, a lot more tactics then with orks or tyranids. The whole point of being able to bring 80 guardsmen to a 2000pts game is for you to be able to shoot 80 times a turn (give or take a few thousand) Your Stormtroopers or Kasrkins which they are called now i guess are meant for the cc and i wouldnt even suggest that, never the less letting your guardsmen take care of the cc, they would honestly get whiped out quicker then a ninja could kill someone.....:ninja: .......when you have a more indepth list then that would be much better but for now id sugest researching more guard lists ESPECIALLY from here because these people have good ones.
