I am really new at WH40k and really need some help. I currently have 1k pt worth of Blood Angels and at least another 2.5k in unbuilt SM stuff tanks LS RHinos terminators dreads and what not. I also have about 1.2k worth of Necron.
I have played a few 500pt games with my buddy who got me into this. I field the BAw/DC and he utilizes DE. I have won every battle so far. This mainly because he was new with DE and learning them although he is quite good with his other armies. We started discussing larger scenario battles. I feel with BA it is much harder to come up with a strategy. I never know when they will succumb to the rage. Since I have only played 500pt battles it has consisted of a CHaplain and DC with two tactical squads. It has not been much of an issue. But we discussed larger point battles where I would have to defend a position. I wanted to use tanks and whirlwinds but feel that if they succumb to rage I won't be able to fire thier weapons. This may be just how new I am in inexpierence with BA and heavy support.
I was thinking of possible going with another SM chapter, one that would give me more choices in ow I utilized and deployed troops and how and when I would use heavy support. I like the vanilla UltraMarine from the diversity it allows, but I really don't like UM blue and yellow. I would go with a darker blue and gold. Is this allowed and would they still be UM? I am also open to suggestions on any other SM chapter that would give me diverse choices on how to deploy them. What I would like to knowo is the pros and cons of any suggested SM chapters. If there is a thread on this please just point me to it. I picked BA in the begining just because I liked the colors more then anything.
Any pointers here would be greatly appreciated.
You can make any chapter you like from the standard list, they do not have to be Ultramarines.
Here a brief summary of the most notable chapters-
These guys are primrily shooty, they have access to lots of plasma weapons because they are one of the first chapters. Their first and second companies have different organisation than other codex chapters.
The first company is known as the deathwing and is made up excluisvely of terminators. Their second company are known as the ravenwing, all these guys ride bikes or landspeeders.
These guys are mainly assault based, they get the death company, basically some marines who are hell bent on killing. Every unit in the army has the risk of runnig straight after the enemy in game, they get a few abilities they make them nasty in hand-to hand.
Possibly the most assaulty army there is. Practically everything they have can be geared to hand-to-hand combat. They have little heavy support when compared to other space marine chapters.
These guys are very assault based, they generally get a lot of attacks and have a few abilities. They can be made into a shooty force but you miss out on their awesome commanders.
These guys are very skilled bike riders. Most of their chapter is based around lightning raids on bikes. Naturally they need to be geared to close combat, but they can have fairly nasty shooty lists.
These guys focus on infiltrating and assault, they like to get close and then strike with maximum force, generally assaulty but can easily be shooty as well.
These guys are as codex as the Ultramarines, though they do specialise in sieges a bit more.
There is nothing stopping you making your own chapter up anyway. Just because the Ultramarines are showed as THE 'codex' chapter doesn't mean they are the only one.
You could always make your own chapter from the space marines codex. You have a choice of rules to choose from and you can make your own color sceme. But if I were you I would stick with blood angels...
I have seen the Death Company: wild-eyed berserkers, who tear their enemys limb from limb, crush skulls with a single blow, snap spines and rip out organs. The Blood Angels are indeed ancient and terrible and only the foolish do not fear them.
make ypur own chapter.
i personally like the Raven guard but don't like their traitsso made up my own schapter.
that way you can really create an army the way you want it.
the outsider forgot that the ravenwing is also assault marines. it doesn't mater much, but that tid-bit could help with your decision. i would really suggest building your own chapter, because you can use the awesome traits that are allowed, and let you us your army for your syle of fighting. you could even use the same colors as BA, or very similar ones, so you don't have to repaint everything totally.
I really do appreciate the feedback. I just need to clarify what I am looking for. When it comes to CC I am more then happy with BA. What I am looking for is a chapter that has a nice mixture of CC and shoot. I want more options tacticly then what BA alone gives me. If I have to defend an objective and the BA succumb to the rage and take off after the enemy I will be hosed. I want to be able to use tanks an go hull down and not worry about them taking off.
This quite possibly is just my lack of knowledge and expierence with BA and maybe it is not that a big an issue. I was just looking for a chapter that falls inbetween. I have thought about creating my own but this may be a bit much as I am really just learning.
Thanks all for the input
The black rage really isn't that much of a hassle. Besides if you stick with BA you can field the Baal Predator...
I use a whirlwind quite often in friendly games, and when it moves I feel that it really just spices the game up a bit. I like the fact that you have to be flexible and retink tactics at the whim of the die. A nice challenge.
I had the same problem and questions when I started, not long ago. I couldn't figure what I wanted or what to do with what I had.
What helped me a lot was playing games. So my advise would be, before you spend the money or commit to any chapter, play as many games as you can. Have fun and try to learn how to take the best advantage of what you have to accomplish the results you want.
You have a lot of different equipment that looks like you haven't use, yet. I'd start using the model you already have, even if it is just primed black. That will make you understand a bit how a LS behaves and in what situation it can help you. Same with the Dreadnogh. Put it to use.
As a last comment, try to play other players besides your friend. Everyone makes different decisions and this will add to your experience.
