Just a quick question, in my all infantry guard army i currently have three veteran squads, the first with three melta, second has three plasma with a plasma pistol (i play lots of marines), and i wanted to ask you guys/girls what you think the third should be equiped with before i convert them. My army is not weak in any particular area (IMO) so just give me your favourite combo...... Best sales pitch wins!!
I was also kind of hoping not to use heavy weopans (i prefer my veterans to be more mobile with my main infantry as fire support), oh and my doctrines are Light infantry, Camo , Veterans, sharpshooter and rough riders, just in case that makes a differance......

Errrm......thats a tricky one.
I play a drop troop army, heavy firepower, light, mobile, fool blasting special waepons galore.
The only other classic guard special weapon is the flamer, but then i can't think why you'd need one really, especially not against marines.
It's unbelivably annoying that Vets can't take sniper rifles, because that would be my optimum choice.
Maybee a combination of the two you already have, a 'take all comers squad'?
good additional info, it gets annoying when people just ask questions in isolation (Eg should I give my sgt a metal helmet or a peaked cap?).

OK assuming they dont have transports, then flamers are out - it is a waste of their BS and they are unlikely to get close enough.
To make them fire support and truely exploit their BS then plasma is the best, although gets hot can be a bugbear.
Meltas lack real range, but can be used, generaly to tank hunt, btu if you do this, then A) you will probably again want a vehicle and a heavy weapon would also help
GLs are pretty mediocre due to the inability to break Marine armour, so overall I would be more inclined to plasma. Particularly since you already have a melta squad
1. I know you said the platoon squads are fire support, but frankly veteran squads withtheir extra special weapons and improved BS are considerably better at it
2. I quite like shotguns on my veterans, this started cos the FW elysian vets come with shotguns, which look ultracool IMHO, however they have proved quiate practicle, if you an get them in to a possition to charge, particlularly if you got melta guns in there, this can really hurt your opponent, classically on that turn I get:
1 bolt pistol
3 melta gun
12 shotgun shots
To accompany the charge, IT does mean you are sacrificing their shooting beyoind 12 inches, but that doesnt appear to be the purpose of your vets either

Yeah, you pretty much are using the twobest options, considering you don't like giving them heavy weapons. How do you use the melta squad? I would assume they're in a chimera, or deepsriking or something. I would think that vet's would be too fragile for melta's to work without having some way to rush them in close before they get their soft flesh shot to ribbons...Originally Posted by Cripsin

Personally, I like to use my vet's as heavy weapons platforms, too. I think that mobile footsloggers are overrated for the IG. Aren't heavies the same price for vet's as for regulars? And they are much more effective in the hands of vet's.
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
The veterans infiltrate, to get into position and using camo i find them to be quite survivable. I see what you mean about the heavy weopans but i allready have three 40 man platoons and 4 fire support squads to deal out the long range death, and if everything stands still i'm worried the game will get a bit boring........
