I just want to gather thoughts on what people would think to play as a pure GK footman force (meaning no vehicles). Any ideas on what you would take or what your armies would look like?
You know what they say, if you dont like the weather in houston...go back to where you came from
well, the main problem is a lack of heavy weapons, without any sort of vehicles, the standard gk just cant take down anything heavy....(monoliths, land raiders, etc.). Unless you like, give the GM hammerhand, and get himn into close combat vs. the vehicles. Thats why you would need like an inquisitor with a gun servitor in the retinue, or pack a land raider. As a force though, it would do excellent as long as you get the forces into cc, thats it for the enemy. The shrouding is great, but it should not be relied upon (unless you are 54" away...). I would see it best as fielding as many of the gk as teleporting troops, and just have like 2 squads of 5 as troop choices. I would give 2 guys in both of those psycannons, and keep them in the rear lines, using the 36" range. Hopefully the enemy would decide to move forward, and once they do, deep strike the teleporting troops to the rear of the enemy forces, and the terms to the sides. Use teh gk's in power armor to utilize the crossfire effect, and the terms to force the enemies to fall back. As I stated earlier, any enemy vehicles would pose the greatest threat, which is why a land raider, or maybe an orbital strike is needed....
When you say no vehicles does that include Dreadnoughts as technically they are walkers not vehicles and in many ways act like infantry. If this was incorporated then the lack of anti-tank wepaons wouldn't look so bad.
true, true, but I am assuming anything larger than an infantry man, that has an armor value. I don't see why it would be that much of a problem, throw in a land raider, and as long as it can take out the tanks, then the gk will do fine
If youre allowing Dreadnoughts than take 2 of those, put them hull down, and destroy the vehicles with their las. Take an orbital strike (i like melta because its best vs vehicles and terms dont get killed by it) and hammerhand on a char if youre facing alot of vehicles. There ya go. Of course in bigger games its not going to work, but 1500 you should be fine.
yea sean is right, two dreads is pretty good. personally i just think it depends on who your fighting. i always try to take at least one dread as my tank/troop buster i give him the hunter killer just becuase it funny on a dread. and a well placed orbital strike can be rough on your opponent, the only problem is the scatter die. ive noticed that in larger games, taking alot of psycannons and deep striking two squads with flamers as a teleport attack can be devestating, (specially to bugs) just be sure to come down steady and as close to the enemy as possible, it sucks when your boys fall out of the sky and they are just out of range with flamers.( incinerators) my advice is just get out there and play a few games with em, oh and justicars can make people cry . well thats my two copper, btw ive been known to flub rules becuase im learning just like you! good luck!
When ever I take Dreadnoughts they always die. Always. But maybe thats because I play Tau most the time.
I've found that Dreadnoughts are effective, and even when they die, they will have drawn enough fire to disrupt your opponent's strategy and cover your troops' getting in. Rarely will you face an enemy in a mission where you have to kill everything- and once you get your men up close with theirs, it's slice slice shoot shoot no more enemy.
Si em, tow en can de lach.
Tak! Tak! Tak ah wan, Tak a lah!
Mi tow, can de lach.
Mi him, en tow.
I play against SM a lot of the time (I know its fairly unfluffy) but my army gets rip[ped apart by LRC, Dread and Predator Annihlator. I take two Dreads but once they get killed my army gets shot down before they have a chance to get close enought to kill the vehicles. Any ideas?
The only way to do a no vehicle GK army IMO is a heavy meatshield of inducted IG and IST's
My current list contains a 54 man meatshield backed up by 14 GKs and 5 Termies, a Dread, LRC and Inquisitor with gunservitors
