I purchased a partly constructed Land Raider on ebay recently. The previous owner had finiished and painted all of it except the last sprue that contains the driver, gunner, storm bolter etc etc.
Now, I would have stuck the storm bolter on as a matter of course until I noticed it is actually an upgrade and will cost points. This got me thinking about the other options too:
Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter
OK for a Rhino but probably not worth it on a vehicle like a Land Raider?
I like the look of this item and I am tempted to use it on the model for that reason alone. But at [xx] points seems an expensive one-hit-wonder. Am I right? Anybody had any luck with it?
Useful on a Dread maybe- but not required on AV14?
Yes I can see the value of this in 4th ed, Crusader comes with this as standard.
Comes as standard.

you can better convert it to the LRC because that version has much better equipment and is cheaper for what you get.
The LR will only be able to fire one lascannon and the HB while the LRC can fire everything.
The LRC has extra armour standard. The only thing you have to give it is smoke. Never underestimate the power of neglating a penetrating hit.
As for transport ability. The LRC is a better choice here because you can opt to load a squad in and deliver it where you want it. You can assault out of a LRC this isn't able when you use a LR.
Don´t mess with the dicegod
Dozer blades are great on a crusader as you can do anywhere without worry!
Smoke and Extra armour though, definatly, always always always every vehicle i use

smoke launchers. good if ur rushing ur crusader 12" to diembark. better be safe then sorry
2000pts Orks 4-2-1
SMoke launchers and extra armor - no more than that.
The storm bolter isn't worth it; you're taking on tanks / heavy infantry with this, no use taking a light gun.
Hunter-killer: way too expensive. Only one shot which usually doesn't do sh*t. Sad, but true. Rather take an extra marine instead.
Searchlight; How often will you run into night fighting?
Dozer blades: Terrain is easily avoided, and with a bit of luck those 1's are not rolled anyway.
PotMS: standard, but definately worth it.
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
Nope, not useful for a rhino either. Why make something that is going to die relatively quickly cost more points? The LR just doesnt need it.Originally Posted by zurielWell, sometimes they work. It still doesnt justify the cost. Your packing 2 TL lascannons on the raider already. Whats a single shot krak missile gonna do for you?Originally Posted by zurielDepends what your fighting doesnt it. If your opoenent has the ability to pen your av14, well, then the measilly ammount of points they cost is well worth it isnt it. Also, its always handy against lance weapons.Originally Posted by zurielExactly, unless you know your playing night fights.Originally Posted by zurielPotMS covers the same thing. EA isnt needed on raiders.Originally Posted by zurielDepends how much cover is on the board. But generally, it isnt required for the standard 25% coverage. Will no doubt come in handy for the medusa campaing though.Originally Posted by zurielRaiders generally do tnot require any upgrades. Its expensive enough as it is.Originally Posted by zurielUh no, LR's come with PotMS. The gunners can fire one TL lascannon as the main weapon, the TL HB as a secondary and the PotMS c an fire the other TL Lascannon.Originally Posted by dicegodBoth Land Raiders have assault ramps. You can assault directly out of either. The LRC just lets you hold more guys. Not particularly useful for normal squads except for BT, though it does come in handy transporting termies.Originally Posted by dicegod

Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
