I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the command structure and regimental organisation used by the imperial guard. All i've managed to gather so far is that a regiment consists of 12 companies each consisting of 2-6 platoons (from the cadian 8th in the Guard Codex). Does anyone know more, e.g. how veterans, storm troopers, heavy weopan squads, tanks and all the rest fit in.
I'm intersted in collecting a large guard force of infantry and would like to madel a proper command structure for my army, if you can't help with the guard structure, then perhaps you could suggest another??
Thanks for any help provided!!
To the best of my knowledge, the size of each regiment depends on the Fluff you want.
Theres several diffent fluff sizes mentioned (if you have the newest codex look on the back cover its got a rough depection of how large 50 regiments are in fluff terms)
The codex also has a 2 page of a fuilly modelled 8th Cadian from that pic it looks like there is 20 companies in each regiement
As an example i can post here the fluff i wrote about my regiment.
To: Departemento Munitorium, segmentum solar
All Arcadian regiments serving in the PDF or Imperial Guard are organized in 10 companies. First 8 are battle companies, each 4.000 pts strong, often splitted in two 2.000 pts battlegroups. 9th company is cavalry, 10 roughriders squadrons acting as forward recon force or detached to fighting battlegroups. 10th is Headquarters company, comprising all the non-combatant personnel ( Field hospital, Transport pool, Bakery, Road engineers ), also are comprised: RGT command staff ( colonel, chief medic officer, regimental standard, comm officer, staff officer ) Military police ( two arbites squads, one judge ) RGT artillery train ( 18 basilisks, detached to the battlegroups as needed ) Special tanks platoon ( 2 demolishers, 2 hellhounds ).
Battle companies can have different specializations.
In our regiment companies 1-2 are drop troops (4 sentinels each ), company 3 to 5 have mechanized elements ( 4 Leman Russ MBTs, 4 Chimera, 6 sentinels each ) company 6 is specialized in jungle\woods warfare (4 sentinels, 1 platoon was also trained as drop troops ) company 7 are specialized Tyranid hunters (2 sentinels) company 8 is specialized in urban warfare ( all infantry ).
Past engagements: the regiment took part in the Badab purge, cleaning the wooded area north of Badab capital against heavy opposition from Astral claws 10th company scouts.
In more recent times the regiment partecipated at the succesful defense of its own home planet against a scouting splinter of Leviathan biofleet.
Current location: planet Arcadia, segmentum solar, refitting and waiting for new orders.
It varries from regiment to regiment, to look at IA3, the tallarn regiments hold in excess of 30 companies, the Elysians have 10, the number of platoons in a comany and squads in a platoon also varries. Add to that support companies and you end up realising the varriance is huge. Regiments are conventionally commanded by colonels up to generals, again it depends on size, again taking IA3 - the talarn regiments were typically commanded by generals, the Elysian and Cadians by colonels.
Above regimental level, regiments are formed into corps and corps into armies based on need for a current campaign (armies and corps do not persist beyond the immediate need, so one year 144th Cadians could find themselves in the cadian Gat as part of XVI corps with other cadian regiments, they next they may be part of XI corps, 4625 army, along with 23rd elysians, combat engineers and the Krieg 1st heavy armoured regiment deployed to Taros. Some regiments are very small (again IA3- on regiment (Dont recall from which plannet) was called "rangers" was asigned to XI xorps, however it was descovered on its arrival in theatre to be approximatley company strength, the Army command immediately broke up the regiment and used its men to reinforce the other regiments in the army.
So modelling from 9 years working in military intelligence:
Smaller regiments would be commanded by a Colonel and have a command platoon or a small command company, coprising areas like 2IC, Adjutant, QM, Provost, Intelligence etc
Larger regients would be commanded by a General, probably with a command company, although many of the roles above may, because of the scale of the regiment, be removed from the HQ company and exist aas seperate companies or platoons.
There is no hard and fast rules
Everything you have been told is a lie!
OK.... Lets have a shot at this then....
My regiment is light infantry, meaning in my opinion no tanks which removes them from the equation, and i think i'll try 6 companies, with 4 platoons per company. A platoon will consist of 3 squads, command section and five man remnant squad (as my regiment has been in the field for a while), so 40 men.
1st Company will be my headquarters company, comprising of non-combatants, command personnel, MP, and two squads of Grenadier Bodyguards (stormtroopers) for my Colonel, aswell as a small cavalry contingent.
2nd Company will be my Recon Section, consisting of 3 platoons and a veteran platoon, which will contain 3 veteran squads and a HQ squad.
3rd Company is designated support company, containing 4 heavy weopan platoons (3 squads in each), and any tanks that may or may not be drafted in.
4th Company could be a reserve company, basically a place to put any extra's that are drafted in to help on specific missions, e.g. stragglers from another regiment, PDF, ship crew etc.
5th and 6th companies will be basic battle companies consisting of 4 platoons.
Does this look ok?? Any suggestions are welcome!! And should each company have its own command squad, i.e. the HQ choice on the organisation chart or not??
In real military terms, a common WW2 British Infantry Division (at full strength waaay too big for even GW to make and paint) would have been structured thus:
(Remember, a division totaled around 13,600 men)
A RASC HQ - Ammunition Company
- Petrol Company
- Supply Company
Anti Tank Regiment - Battery
Royal Engineers - Field Company
- Field Company
- Field Company
- Field Company
Infantry Brigade - HQ - Battalion - HQ Company - Company
- Anti tank Company
Artillery HQ - Artillery Regiment - Battery of 18 or 25 pdrs
- Battery of Howitzers
- Artillery Regiment
Divisional Cavalry Regiment - Squadron
Yes a HELL of a lot went into a Division, I'll show you the whole diagram when you are better Cripsin
I suggest you focus on a battalion strength, possibly a brigade with some auxillery cavalry? Or you could scale down the whole thing into something fesable.
edit: BTW a battalion consists of 33 officers and 780 men, divided into 4 rifle companies (each with a headquaters and three platoons) and a headquaters company of six platoons (Signals, anti aircraft, mortar, carrier, pioneer and administration).

Armageddon.....................the armpit of the Imperium
My fluff, Vinancium 26th, had 25 Infantry companies, 7 Grenadieer, 8 Mech, and 4 Armored, plus two all infantry. It rounded out at about 700 tanks and 9000 men. So it all depends.
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
For average amongst the Rahaxin regiments, over haft of the regiment is full battle companies, it equals roughly 25 companies with average being 5 chimeras, 3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks, 4 platoons completely full, A general with his staff and the First Companies' Commissar, 9 sentinels, and a single full platoon of storm troopers. The other haft of the regiment is the reserve companies which are armed with a single Chimera, 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank, 2 platoons, a Colonel with a lower rank Commissar, either a squadron of sentinels or a single hellhound, and a single squad of Storm Troopers. All in All it roughly equals around 11,300 soldiers per regiment.
May the Dice Gods bless our rolls, and may the Emperor grant us a victory for the Imperium!::raises fist as the Dice Gods Commissar::
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!
Last words of Colonel Densit from the Rahaxin 19th
"DISS NOT THE EMPEROR'S POINTED STICK, HERETIC!"
If it doesn't work with the Emperor. Then it's been officially Karmooned!!!
BEWARE THE POWER OF THE LIGHT-BRIGHT!
