I wanted to know how effective sharpshooters is as a doctrine in the long term. I use it on almost all of my men at the current time mainly for fluff reasons, and it seems to serve me quite well, but do you think it would be better to invest my points in models rather than doctrines (i allready have light infantry and camoleoline)......
In my 2000pt army for example, i spend 120 points on sharpshooters (my three remnant squads, junior officer squads and vets dont get it), could this be better spent?
with 120 pts you could have full squads instead of remnants
maybe give sharpshooters only to your heavy weapon support squads? or to command sections if they have more than one meltagun?
Doing some maths for a regular infantry squad:
If the squad has only lasguns, sharpshooters will give you the additional firepower of one and a half lasgun
If the squad has an heavy weapon you will get the additional firepower of one lasgun + one sixth of lascannon, missile launcher or one third of autocannon or half heavy bolter.
if you have heavy weapons squads (ie fire support or anti-tank etc...) use it for them. I find this works extremely well.
But the only way the Sharpshooters doctrin would be more useful than another squad, is if you role at least ten ones in one turn. Since I have only seen that happen once, I would say use the rest of the points on another unit.
taking another unit not only guarantees you the shots every turn, it also puts another target on the board (which is handy because guard die pretty easily)
Personnaly I dont use sharp shooters, but conventional wisdom on the subject is close to what Korim said - put it on our heavy weapons squads, possibly on special weapons squads but that is it
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I take it on my Fire Support/AT Squads but thats about it. I would take it on more but I use LI as a doctrine too and on my LI squads I've got Sniper Rifles and Plasma Guns both of which do nothing with Sharpshooter on them.
I just really depends on how you roll....Its also kind of nice to have that mental edge that you're going to be able to re-roll 1/3 of your misses....note you should also read the official FAQ on Sharpshooters. It really makes the doctrine more interesting.
I'd recommend reading BoxANT's post, but the entire thread should be helpful to you.
Thanks allot guys... From now onwards, im removing sharpshooter from basic squads but retaining it on fire support squads.
Thanks for all the help.
