Hey guy im just starting 40k and just need a little bit of advice for my heavy weapons squad. Im really leaning towards autocannons because they seem like they could just sit back out of range (48") compared to the heavy bolters (36") and just unleash hell on space marines or any other well armored infantry and light armor while my stormtroopers take care of infantry. On the other hand though heavy bolters have more shoots and I've played a few sample games and nothing seems to tear up infantry better than a squad of heavy bolters and plus heavy bolters are just cheaper but not by much. Anyways guys i would love to here your opinions and any suggestions you have. Thanx!
I like heavy bolters better for line squads, and Autocannons better for fire support squads. Missle Launchers are good too as they don't give marines an armor save.

I use HBs over auto cannons in my support squads simply for the increased rate of fire. They are used to cull assaulty infantry as they move forward so the range issue doesnt matter that much.
The auto cannon however is a great weapon to take out light armour. Some people will say that they are also good for heavy infantry, but MEQs will still get there saves.
It's worth a krak!
Personally, i'd go with heavy bolters, unless your army is lacking in Anti-tank capabilites, (as heavy bolters are almost purely anti-infantry, while autocannons can double as a light anti tank weapon).
Against MEQ's, both weapons have virtually identical effects, but against softer targets, the HB is king! If it's anti-infantry you want, Heavy bolter all the way.
Inquistion force WIP. Pics on posts 17 and 23.
Heavy Bolters all the way!
1. Anything threatening is gonna be within range ( aka assault troops ), and even then most games are pitched so its still gonna be within range.
2. Increased rate of fire
3. Same AP value as autocannon
4. Lascannons are for tanks / Heavy bolters for men

It depends what you want the said squad to shoot at.
Heavy Bolters = anti-infantry
Autocannons = anti-light vehicle
In an army with seven lascannons I've taken two autocannons simply to gun down things like landspeeders and vipers so I don't have to wast lascannon shots on them. I've also taken four heavy bolters as an anti infantry role. At anyrate, I'd suggest you'd take more heavy bolters than autocannons as there is almost always more infantry to shoot than light vehicles.

It depends on the rest of your army. Is it geared to take down skimmers and the like, or do you have tanks (such as hellhounds) to take out infantry? Autocannons have a larger range than heavy bolters, in addition to increased strength. I only take a single support squad of heavy bolters- because as most of you are sure to know, space is a difficult thing to manage during deployment, and the extra range from autocannons really helps when firing over the table. Both weapons have their uses, however, and I don't see why you should have to decide between the two! Take both!
Both are equaly usefull depending on circumstances.
High rate of fire
Good agaisnt lots of weak armored troops
Weak vs tanks
(This is a simple Minigun, fire as fast as possible and hope it hits something)
2/3 of HB rate
Relatively high strength
Good agisnt heavy armored troops
Excelent vs skimmers (Bikes) and light tanks
(More of a 50mm heavy machinegun, marks its targets and tears them apart)
i dont think you can say one is better than the other. both are good in the right circumstances.
Where there's a will there's a weapon
first line squad should have heavy bolter's second line squad (if there is one) should have autocannons
