Alright, i've got an auction coming up at the GW shop near me and they apparently have a LOT of space marine stuff going up including a full ultramarine army already painted and a couple of the really big marine battle boxes (the ones that sell for about 320 dollar canadian here)
Now, I currently play nids and i've been wanting to start up a secondary army for a bit now and have found a big interest in space marines which is odd, because i hate them.. everybody plays them. My mani problem is i'm not sure which faction I should play if I decide I want to drop the 400 bucks I have at auction. I own the space marine codex, the blood angels codex and i've taken a look at the spacewolves codex and the dark angels codex.
I'm looking for input as to what you guys think i should consider. As much as I love the idea of an assault army, I already own nids so i could do just as much assaulting (well more actually) with my little nids. I was looking for something hardcore shooty maybe without being tau (cuz they suck.)
Just toss me your 2 cents if you can. I wanna know what's popular, what you think is best in terms of shooting armies and so on. Maybe it'll help me make up my damn mind.
The way I see it, it's always good to have a second army laying around, preferably one that your main army would like to beat up on. That way you've always got a game ready to go and all you need is somebody to play against. If you want to go fluffy there's no better advisary for your 'nids then the Ultramarines. Those guys hate 'nids, and understandably so. (You eat my home and I'd be pretty pissed off)
If you still want somethin' really shooty I'd say maybe Imperial Fists or Iron Hands. Not too sure on the second but I know IFs are generaly pretty shooty.Dark Angels are too I think. Last time I saw 'em they had lotsa plasma flying around, then again it's been over a year since I've seen any other Marine armies in action.
Yeah, I mean I love the blood angels death company idea, and I love the true grit for the space wolves. But at the same time, those Tyrannic war veterans lookin pretty sweet too. I was thinking ultramarines but I also wonder how popular and overplayed they are. That, and the marine codex is setup way different than my nid codex.. so it hurts my brain.Originally Posted by Edicius
Overall, you should find the Space Marine Codex easier to use than the Tyranid one once you spend some more time using it and all.
For shooty Space Marines chapters, Dark Angels, Imperial Fists and Iron Hands are pretty much your selection as someone said above. However, with Ultramarines, you get total tactical flexibility, which is nice. For one game, you could take an assaulty list, and for another you could go shooting heavy. Also, because you're playing Games Workshop's pet army, you'll find yourself with a lot of cool Special Characters, as well as the ability to take Tyranic War Veterans and Deathwatch Space Marines (Deathwatch can't be used if any Traits are being used for the Space Marine army, and the Ultramarines don't do that, so you're in the clear here). Rules for Deathwatch Kill Teams can be found in White Dwarf (don't ask me which issue, I'm too lazy to dig it out).
As I'm sure you'll notice, there will be other Ultramarine players around, which can get annoying. I know that when I used an Ultramarine army (4th Company, though. I don't like the 2nd Company look personally), I got pretty tired of seeing other Ultramarine armies, and even more tired of playing against them.
So, it really all depends on what you want for an army. If you want to have some choice of tactics, Ultramarines are pretty much the best way to go, but if you want to focus on one particular aspect of combat, you'll find that a Trait Chapter, or one of the special ones that have their own Codex will suit you best.
I think the fluff just hurts my brain. I mean with my nids, there's not alot of fluff, there's no special chapters or rules with flaws and all sorts of stuff like that. No different chapters. gun selection is limited as are tactics.Originally Posted by Firedrake28
Even just with Tyrannic war veterans my brain hurts. So much stuff about terminator honors, terminator armor, sergeants, veteran sergeants.. Swapping 1 weapon for this, 1 weapon for that..
My brain is gonna explode.
I won't really be painting the models anytime soon, still have 2500 points of nids to paint for Medusa V. So i'm not SUPER rushed to figure out exactly what I want to play. But i mean, it's a pain. LOVE the death company and the assaultyness of the blood angels, i think it's awesome (why else would I pick up the codex?). The space wolves I haven't really read up on but True grit is always awesome (just ask nurgle players) not to mention those wolves they can field and whatever. But again, part of me wants to break off of assault based armies.
Can't make up my mind. Of course ultramarines would be a better 'starting point' for me I guess but I don't want to run into that trap of constantly fighting other ultramarines or seeing them fielded all the time (although I must admit I haven't yet seen any at my workshop, it's mostly Tau, IG and black templars with a few nids in the mix)
again, just figured that while I can get models cheap I might as well buy them especially when it's a giant army box. Save myself some dollars. would also let me do some assembly (haven't done much in a while other than a tyrant, fex and the death leaper) which would give me a break from the brain rotting that is painting.
Oh, and just so everyone knows, if I get like 6 people in this thread flaming each other saying this chapter is better blah blah blah and arguing back and forth (like in the other new marine player thread) I definitely won't pick those armies. In fact, that thread has made me want to stear almost entirely clear of blood angels and space wolves. And the popularity of ultramarines makes me want to steer clear of them... but those tyrannic war veterans look so sexy.. and i have lots of spare bits to make them look even more killer.
Then Go ultra. Or make a new anti-nid divergent chapter, like "Scourge of the Devourer" or something. That's my favourite aspect of the Marines, They're able to be whoever you want!
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
I would say build your own army using traits and the large army boxes. I really like my custom chapter, and it allows me to use traits to design what they can and cannot do, instead of letting the poor lost souls at GW make all the important decisions for me. Just my $0.02.
Best of luck,
Wow, not many people willing to put in their 2 cents. A mod, a girl that hates me, and two other guys. Nice.
Oh well, thank you guys for your input, i'll more than likely go ultramarines.. mainly for the tyrannnic war veterans and the other special units and characters. Maybe i'll try something different another time... this is all of course.. if I can get those army boxed sets nice and cheap.
make your own chapter.
as suggested an anti-tynaids chapter
get suffer not the alien to live and aonther trait.
making your own chapter is always fun.
"Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you three answers; all of which are true and terrifying to know"
Good luck, and be sure to post some pics if you get any cool models in that set, or paint up any cool Tyranid hunters!Originally Posted by jackofasses
