I believe I'll change to Imperial guard, I just admire them so much I guess. But first, there are a few things I don't know about them.(I virtually nothing, I've never seen the codex). It would be great help if you could answer some of these questions.
1. What are doctrines? Are they like space marine traits
2. What is the difference between catachans and cadians etc. Do you have to choose one or cany you have any combination.
3. How popular are Imperial guard.
4. And the most important thing, are they fun to play.
Thanks to anyone that helps me out.
I forgot to add this.
could someone tell me what year the latest Imperial guard codex was released because I don't want to put money into a codex that will be updated along with the new range of models.
2003 is the copyright but that doesn't mean it was released then but that more or less lets you know.
The general wisdom is that we have about another 3 years till they even think about totally changing stuff but the IG has so little cheese that they'd be hard pressed taking anything away from us.
The only thing that might be taken away from us eventually is something like Armoured Companies since that is chapter approved. The current codex is a pretty sound.
Doctrines are kinda like Traits but more broad and less incisive to tactics. Doctrines are more strategic than tactical.
Catachan and Cadians are different model ranges that GW has produced over the years. Kinda like Black Templar/Space Wolf ranges for the Uberines but only more so.
Popular is a rather nebulous word. Do you mean popular by everyone else will be playing them or popular by everyone likes what IG's capabilities. The answer to both is moreless maybe. Guard players are never many in number but sometimes you find a couple in one place but more often than not it seems that they're pretty spread out. The capabilities of IG are unique because they're so limited because the army is so human. Even more than Uberines IG depends on what weapons tech it has available. There are so many different options available to the IG that you have to be a shrewd commander when making out your forces. A few wrong tatical and strategic decisions and you've lost the battle already. IG is not very for those who invest their troops in the wrong troops.
As to fun to play. It is if you don't mind a 50% miss rate vs the 33.333333 miss rate for Uberines and other BS 4 units its fun. The IG depends on its numbers to do anything useful. Never forget that. Sheer numbers of guns men and steel makes IG go round.
Yes the IG are not at all suited to clever or subtle strategy like Tau or Eldar. The best way to fight is get stuck in and bash away like a sledge hammer. Though once you are confident with 'em you can employ formation and tank squad tactics which work well. They are a fun army to play, and so many models!
Cadian and Catachans differ in that Cadians represent most IG regiments, while Catachans are a little more specialised (and only have a 6+ Sv!)
My favourite thing about IG is the "Lasgun line of death" whereby once an enemy gets close enough, you suddenly whip out 80+ lasgun shots and suddenly the tables turn !
Just to add a bit here
There are plenty of toys to play with as IG but you have to very careful how you use them.
Word of advice, buy the codex and read it twice or even thrice before you buy any models. IG are an expensive army and it takes alot more work getting even a small force running, since it's not uncommon that an IG army contains almost twice the number of models of another army of the same size.
It'll also answer all your questions alot better than we can.
3. No. It takes a special kind of person to play IG.Originally Posted by Elric101
