i see a lot of people playing elite guard lists with lots of vets and storm
troopers and a point some of you make is that the hellgun is little more
then a glorified lasgun
i think that the best of the best would have something a little better then
what they have.
Just look at the models, the guns need a backpack to use and in "ghostmaker"
they talk of how loud and powerful they are as they knock people off there feet
id like them to be S4 ap - but it may be a bit overpowered so maybe assault 2?
hmm str 4 would seem to be overpowerful, the suggestion of assult 2 does sit nice but implies a faster rate of fire, whilst that would suit the backpack, it doesnt suit the fluff, overall I dont think it needs revamoing, sure it does if you expect a highly trained stormtrooper to match an elite biogenetic superhuman who is trained for war every waking hour, but frankly I dont

str 4 defiantely, they are supposed to be more powerfull so they should show it. the fact that they can punch through standard guard armour is nothing to be overly happy about. the chances of playing guard against guard arent as high as they probably of for instance playing marines.

I don't really see where strength 4 AP - would be over-powering. As it stands, Storm Troopers really seem inferior to Hardened Veteran squads, but making hellguns more effective would help balance that out quite a bit (though I might suggest a third special weapons choice as well). Storm Troopers aren't equal to Space Marines and they shouldn't be. They are close, however, to Marine Scouts. Or at least should be. Strength 4 would put them on better footing both against Scouts which are similar in storyline as well as points cost, while still being distinctly Guard. No armor penetration so they're not threatening bolters for superiority, but its still a definite upgrade over lasguns. Considering they're supposed to be high-powered lasguns, I don't think the improved AP value reflects that very well, and assault 2 wouldn't do it in the least.
Storm Troopers need something to help them out, because as it stands damn near anything they can do, Hardened Veterans can do better.

I went with the increased Str.
A cutting laser may be less powerful than a lasgun blast, but be able to cut through things like Flak armour. So increased strength of laser (as the Hellgun is described) doesn't need to be increased AP.
Whilst the increased Str does mean it can then damage vehicles, it is still only glancing hits. Also a ST squad will often have melta/plasma so the vehicle arguement isn't as strong. THe melta/plasma will most likely kill it anyway.
I personally think the ST should get Autoguns. Its a far cooler image to think of a ST with a high powered modern machine gun! But then again, being drop troops means they would have very limited ammo

wow, i didnt think a lot of you would go for increased str. because of the holy bolter
even through i would like them to be str. 4 i went for assault 2 because storm troopers
are ment to be moving up and taking objectives, spear heading assaults ect.
i think that because of the bolter games workshop will never make it str. 4 but i
could see them making it assault 2
i just picked what would be more likely to happan but i would still like str. 4
Eh. I could see assault 1 before any of the other upgrades, but I don't think it should be changed.
Increasing the strength of a helgun is too much, It would make them just like a bolter if you are fighting MEQ armies. I think they are great the way there are, superior to las guns when you are fighting something that is not heavily armored, and inferior to bolters all the time. If you want some perspective, a marine with a helgun would be no better than a marine with a bolter if you increased the strength (if they were fighting each other). I think there are some changes that could be made that would be nice and fit in with the storm trooper role.
1)Assault 1 (Great idea ghandi) [more mobile stormies]
2)Heavy 2 12"; assault 1 24" [mobile stormies that can pack a short range punch]
3)make them like heavy cc weapons that reduce the saves of the enemy (but still leave them with - for ap. Then they wound like lasguns, but manage to hurt armor too, but not the damage of a bolter.
