i got inspired by a prevoius thread to look at tau's codex and i must say that i am well pissed off. They seem to out do the guard in what they are supposed to be good at. and they're troops are very cheap. about the same price as stormies which for an elite guard player like me really ticks me off. why couldnt humans get cool weapons like the tau. come one the words pulse rifle even sound cooler than lasgun (torch)
Where there's a will there's a weapon
Nice one geom, my first post on this site was about this very question
from what iv seen on this site its seems that we can still own there fire
warriors with heavy bolters and there suits with lascannons but it seems
that games workshop dosnt like anyone useing amour vs the tau
really the only thing you need to worry about is the hammerhead killing
your men with there SUB shot and broadsides taking out amour or if they
take a mech list
it seems that the tau are games workshops new fav race after the space
marines and while they have taken a lot from us they give them all this
but one thing i will say is just because of all that^ i will never chose the tau
over the guard and hope you dont either
They are actually very different armies. The Pulse weapons are very superior to the lasgun, but firewarriors can't take heavy weapons. IG is designed to be slow, lumbering, and extremely powerful when grouped together. Tau are designed to be fast, utilizing surgical strikes and tactical finesse to capture an objective rather than just throwing troops at it. Tau work best when used in a combined-arms aproach, where every unit benefits another.
1500 years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the Universe
500 years ago everybody knew the world was flat
5 minutes ago you knew humans were alone on the planet
Imagine what you'll know tomorrow
i refuse to play with non human armies except marines because they are close enough. when tau originally came out i was even thinking of using them to convert to IG but obviously i didnt as the new cadians came out which are cool. still pisses me off that we are looking for a strength 4 weapon and they have str 5. WTF!
Where there's a will there's a weapon
I never get threads like this..
Okay, so you play an elite IG army..
And you're surprised that Tau can outshoot you..
By playing an elite IG army, you chose to saccrifice traditional IG virtues like static firepower. To play static firepower, you need a lot of heavy weapons and numbers, not elites..
The problem is not that Tau can outplay IG in their traditional areas, it's that you're trying to outplay Tau in their traditional areas. They also have WS and I 2, cost 4 points more than a guardsman, and can't take heavy weapons in their infantry squads.still pisses me off that we are looking for a strength 4 weapon and they have str 5.
You can have a strength 9 weapon in your infantry squads.
My second army is a Tau army and while it is true that they have newer, shinier toys than the IG, they have a few weaknesses in their army list as well. Most apparent is their lack of special and heavy weapons. The only really viable platform the tau have for special weapons are their crisis suits.. compared to IG where there basically isn't a force org option that CANT take special or heavy weapons. Against space marines I know which army I'd prefer to take.. the one that can carry 10 or so plasma guns and about the same number of lascannons.
Final note on the 'oh my god tau are too strong' ***** session...
Ever read the space marine codex?
What Guardsmen dont want to hear...
"Ok boys, time to fix bayonets!"
Stay true to the Imperium! You must take this anger and harness it into destroying the tau...not joining them. I am a heretic...Once i played as the tau...but i have seen the light (or rather...dark) of the galaxy, and the Imperium, my own race, needs me. I still pay for my sins. Do not fall for their power...they know not courage...good human courage.
Tau are about the only opponent you want your guardsmen to think of charging.
Tau are very powerful, but they have their weaknesses.
Firstly, CC, they are probably the crappiest guys in CC outside of gaunts (who cost less).
Secondly, they don't have many template weapons, sure the hammerhead railgun is lethal, but take that down (or at least stop it from shooting) and the guardsmen will live longer.
Thirdly, most of their weapons require LoS, using mortars against them could be a lot of fun (especially against static tau).

btw, it came down to deciding weather or not to buy IG or TAU, but my frinds have SM armies and i wanted an army TOTALY unrelated, ill prolly take the IG as my seccond choice. (or maybe space drawves...)
