I have just recently obtained the Imperial Guard codex, haven't even read through it yet. But I was wondering what the best way to start off is. I was thinking of buying 40 cadians and command to start off. But are there better ways to begin because I hear that new IG players buy the wrong units right from the word go!
Anyway, how did you start?
p.s. I will definitely collect IG now. Much more potential for an interesting army than marines.
um first read your codex then come up with a few lists you like then if you want Cadin or Chatachan modles get the battle force box a box of men and something to be your hq and the command plattons this will give you a useable starting force.
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
Pick whichever models you like the best.. Catachans don't have to represent Catachans, they can be anything from Dookian Fen Guard to a regiment of your own devising.
But yeah, have a read through your codex, and start thinking about what kind of army you want. Do you want a list with masses of infantry, lots of tanks, a smaller number of more elite troops, a balance of many different elements?
Once you've decided the general direction of your army, you should have a much better idea of how to go about building it.
I personally think the mass infantry / heavy weapons list is the way to go with guard if you want to play ultra competatively, though you will be rather inflexible unless you compensate somehow.
I would agree with the posts above. Don't buy anything until youve written an army list or 8.......
If you have some friends to play with and alternative models, then you could allways playtest it as well...
If you end up going for a standard guard force, then i'd suggest the boxed set, and a command squad.
Hope that helped!!
Ok, thanks to everyone who has posted. I've just read through the codex and have a few questions.
1. The special rule 'advisors' on page 40. Does this mean that to have advisors in your infantry squads you must max them out in both types of command squad.
2. I will be mainly playing 350 points to start off once a week with the force organisation min. 1 troop.
The restrictions are no model with more than two wounds, no vehicle with over 33 combined armour value (all 3 sides) and no special rules.
What is an effective army list for these battles.
3. How many cadian shock troops is standard for a 350 point balanced list.
p.s. reputation will be awarded
1 yes thats the way advisors work. they must be assigned to HQ first
2 look on the army lists area for all lists dealing with Combat patrol. This is type of battle you're describing.
3 350 points can be eaten up quickly by special weapons, heavy weapons and Doctrines but I personally recommend using 1 HQ squad and 4 line squads (45 troopers total) then using the remaining 70 points to upgrade them
Rather than 350 go for a 400 pt combat patrol. Then move as fast as you can to 1000 pts. IMO the Guard doesn't really start to kick off until you reach that point, at that point you have more flexibilty with the lists as the platoons won't be eating up such a large percentage of your pointsOriginally Posted by Elric101
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
Does no special rules include no infiltrate?? Because in standard combat patrol you can infiltrate/deepstrike i beleive. (maybe this is a house rule??)
1: As Socprof previously stated, advisors do indeed need to be placed in all command squads first. The only exception to this is the indpendant commissars doctrine, effectively creating commissars as independant charectors.
2: I would use 3 line infantry squads and a command, all with camoleoline and light infantry (If infiltration is allowed). In 350pts this would leave 50 for upgrades, i would suggest heavy bolters or autocannons for the infantry squads, and maybe a special weopan or 2 for the command. Weopans stronger than auto cannons are un-neccesary due to the armour limitation. Maybe consider plasma or melta for the command for MEQ killing duty.
Again as stated above, you may want to check the army lists page for other combat patrol lists (although most will be 400 not 350 points)
Hope that helped!!
I rather like that concept of LI and Camoline in a CP....assuming you can use infiltrate in a cp setting.
It would make things rather interesting.
welcome to the guard
im just starting out to and iv got 7 men ready so far
what you could do i take 3 tanks in 1000 points so you can start wining
after you get your two troop and hq choice id get some storm troops like me
dont use commissars as they suck but i like the idea of them so i will use some as my JO
in command squads
