Ive been using orbital strikes in a few of my games and find that they only kill about 2-5 models a game, at least 90% of the time it misses. I want to know if Orbital Strike has ever paid off for anyone?
The intimidation factor of the orbital strike can sometimes be enough for it to justify taking it but having said that I'v never had it really do anything useful.
Its better in scenarios where a particular terrain piece is the objective. It is somewhat difficult to take a take and hold objective if lance strikes are hitting it.
I think it pays off cause it usually kill about 8 Orks or like 5 heavyer troops....because the heavy troops often jumps up on hills so they get a better "view" of the battlefield (read in the rulebook why it is good to stand on a hill because i aint tellin) so that would be a primary place to get a lance strike...I got 11 orks in 1 shot and that may just be luck but i think it will pay for itself..

It also works really well against low-mobility high-shooty armies like Tau. Select a piece of terrain over near their side and it should likely scatter into the massed ranks of fire warriors.
I've found that it usually takes out at least 2-3 models minimum, not quite paying for itself. But I still take it, because most of my opponents demand to see my army list pre-game, and "orbital strike" sans any idea WHERE it'll hit is rather good at creating paranoid opponents.
One tactic that can work well for a deep strike army is to put the orbital strike on terrain in the middle of the enemy army. Then, deep strike all of your knights to one side and overwhelm that half of their army (if one side has more shooty troops, its better to go for that side). You should be able to crush them pretty bad, and they'll be forced to get the rest of their army over to you by going directly thru the orbital strike zone. If they simply wade through it, theyre going to take causalties. If they go around it, you'll have plenty of time to wipe up the first half of the army and then move on for seconds. If they run with their remaining force then you can usually beat them with bolter fire (thats where those storm bolters really shine) combined with shrouding. Any comments?
Thanks for all the advice, on using Orbital Strike so from what i have read it sounds like most people use the Orbital Strikes.
Meh...it can be fun driving your buddy's Fire Warrior screen away from that Broadside.
just my opinion, but if your fielding all gk's orbital strike is a must, if you place it properly its devasting . and terrain pieces like rivers/roads etc. hehe thats just mean it can get back its points. it just takes some time to get used to using it. once you start putting it on the right spots its gonna start hurting someone. also if your playing mob armies, they can really be nasty. just my two cents, take it or leave it =)
