Isn't a basilisk just a str. 9 ap.3 whirlwind with lots more range. Isn't a basilisk much more effective or am I missing the point here.
I love my whirlwind for my marines, but isn't a basilisk much more effective.
If you had a choice in a guard army, would you take the whirlwind or the bassie?
Well, for one thing, the whirlwind can fire castellan Missiles.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
Basilisk has earthshaker rounds.
But as a SW player....I'd go with the whirlwind because it has multiple shots and the basilisk has only 1...
Yeah, Castellan missiles are good, but once the two armies are on the table they both only have one sort of ammo each. In which case the earthshaker would be better unless you were trying to load a small opening with mines thus making the castellan missiles a better choice.
What do you guys think is better for the points of each?
A whirlwind can lay those very cool minefields, but the Bassilisk is the ultimate in ordnance.
For an extra 40 points (Over a whirlwind). You get 3 times the range, 4 extra points on strength and 1 extra point of AP.
A whirlwind will struggle to take out MEQs, the Basalisk laughs at them.
If SM had the choice to take Bassies I bet they would, its just sex in seige tank form!

When I say jump you don't ask me 'How high?' maggot! You jump!
I agree, after using marines since I began i thought the whirlwind was the ultimate choice for indirect fire. But every army i battled back then was eldar, 'nids and tau. all juicy targets for my vengeance missiles. but soon nough i played 1500 vs. space wolves and killed two marines.
with a basilisk that would have been a completely different story. that's why i love the bassies already.
anyway, how many do you field in an army of say, 1500
1-2 basilisks, 3 is the max in the heavy choice isnt it?
In an army of 2000 to 2500 I'd say 2-3 basilisks.
Whirlwinds are nice for marines, as there cheap and relativly effective
Basilisks are nice for Guardsman as they blow the heck outta most scarry things
although if you ask a marine player which 1 he'd take? , well touchy but i say the Basilisk, where as the IG player will stick to his basilisk...
For those enemies who willingly move against the Supreme judgement, of the Divine Emperor of man kind, Eternal death shall be granted. Amen
The Basilisk is something I would describe as pure joy. I borrowed a Guard-army for a Mega-battle (7000pts on each side, I had 1750pts IG and 1250 Eldar) and placed one in each corner of the board (we played on a 12 x 8 board) and they dominated the field until 15 termies DS and took them out... But they were fun!
Which is why you place a group of 50 conscripts to protect each one
