Welcome to Librarium Online!
for terminators in CoD are heavy flamers better than Assualt cannons. i figure ill use regular terms becasue they are more versitile than assualt terms. but i was thinking of also including a unit of assualt terms. i am starting a templar army and i figured i would gear it more twards CoD stuff

Heavy Flamers on move 6" models are inherantly flawed. You only get to cover a couple of models before eing assaulted, or toast something which you could have beaten down in an assault (IG).
While walking up the field you'll be missing the 2 Assault Cannon which as they don't punch through Power armour all the time either can stand you in good stead, plus having anti-tank capability.
Deep Striking can work, but a Pod is really needed. If you want to go that way, use a Dread its a cheaper way to a Heavy Flamer. If you are doing it with Termies use 1 HF and 1 A.C IMO.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
No! you just cant go past an assult cannon with its 4 (rendering) shots with that you will probly get egleast 1 6's and you would only get to use the flamer like once.
Assult cannon all the way matey.
A WISE MAN LEARNS FROM THE DEATHS OF OTHERS
In the first cityfight book, those termies would have been deadly but in the newer rules I think it would be a better bet to keep at least one cannon if you want to use the flamer...Originally Posted by Anabis_Xero

In my opinion assualt cannons would be the way to go... however since you are playing a templars army I would also have to say that assualt terminators fit right in with the rest of the army... not saying that the normal termies cant hold their own in CC (quite the opposite actually) however its just assualt terminators fit in better with the BT fluff, abilities, tacitcs and overall army. However you are talking about Cities of Death (Great new addition if you ask me I just bought the codex) Anyways besides the point. If you are not going to go along with all of the BT fluff its fine its still a deadly army. But I would highly recommend assualt cannons... 4 rending shots... you are bound to get 1 6 atleast! seriously flamers are over rated. You are in CC by the next turn... if you even get a chance to use it... assualt cannons on the other hand are different. Their range, power, and rending:shifty: is godly. All in all if your taking normal termies take assualt cannons... I would:yes:.
Also another thing to think about is the strategems. Imagine Assualt cannons re-rolling to hit!!!! RENDING!! or imagine re-rolling to wound. Now on the other hand if you are taking flamers... you can add +1 S to the template with a power generator straegem. I would still highly recommend assualt cannons.
Hope this was some help

I tested out a flamer heavy army in a cities of death test game the other day. Had about 7 flamers and two heavy flamers on Termies. I found that even with the cover save that just about everyone seemed to get, shooting was far better than flamers. At most I could get 4 models under the template. Although, when a unit scattered close to one of my assault squads and I could hit the DSed unit with two flamers at once, that was pretty nice. In the future I'm going to go back to assault cannons.

in CoD i would still have a LRC full of Assault Terminators with a chaplain. because that way the LRC is less likly to die and still just as useful once the termies are out of its belly.
but if your going with standard terminators go with assault cannons. because even though you are in heavy amounts of cover from the city, you may still be shooting at the max range. depends on what mission.
I think Heavy Flamers work great and disagree at least partially with most of what's been said.In CoD rending is much less effective because it's relatively common to have a 4+ cover saves. (that was an difficult post to read btw)Originally Posted by Master Falcon DeathwalkerIn the old cityfight they would only get 1d6 hits in an 8" radius. Now they can get the full template's worth. If the terrain forces the unit to bunch up to gain cover then this is obviously good. If the terrain still allows 2" spread AND cover then you're right, much less useful. We found flamer templates got 4 hits minimum in Cod so far with our terrain.Originally Posted by darkreeverFlamers ignore cover saves. I found that high rate of fire weapons were better than low AP weapons but weapons that denied a cover save were better still. Heavy Flamers are solid gold against any army that can't save vs thier AP. However I would agree that one unit with 2 Heavy Flamers is probably sufficient.Originally Posted by magnetman
