OK i was thinking in my bed the other night how most people who like to advance and assault as soon as possible, so i thought y not have a ton of 5 man squads with 4 bolters and 1 hvy bolter for anti-infanty and stuff, with some sort of fast attack like assault troops to counter assault, with a few preds with all lascannons for antii-tank and super strong hive tyrants guys?
First may I start by saying that while in bed, you should be thinking of OTHER things instead of Warhammer40K....LOL....but on to your idea....
Yes, I am going to start that tactic the next time I play. I have 2 full squads and 3 5 man squads. The 5 man squads are my "heavies". I play a Black Temp army. I use 1 heavy (depending on who im playing against) and 1 special weapon (plasma, flamer, melta). This works out nice like little fire teams! then I have the 2 full squads that are close combat squads. I can also make one of them into a gun squad OR break them into 2 and then only use 1 full squad as a hand to hand squad. I also have a 10 assault marines WHICH I am breaking into 5 man squads so i can fit 4 specials into them instead of only 2!!! Nice idea eh? ALso with the Black Temps, they are fearless, so I could care less about how many casualties I suffer.....I will always be going forward anyway! hehehe...
There are problems with this- the ease of neutralising a 5 man squad/ rendering it incapble of holding table quaters, outnumbering it in close cobat etc, however..
I usualy play my nilla marines (Sons of Medusa) with the bulk of the points in the Troops area, the troops are:
one squad of up to 9 scouts with all but the serg with sniper riles (anti C'tan/Avatar/greater demon squad, also useful for pinning)
load of tac squads with 6 men (vet sgt and a missile launcher plus 4 bolter maines) usually travelling in a razorback with TL las cannon, EA and smoke) the razorbacks do the job of the preds you mentioned, the squads take on infantry buit the ML can still do vehicles if the razorbacks are struggling
Possibly a single full tac squad tooled up with a flamer and acompanied by a HQ to act as a a buffer if anyone gets close, they may even have a rhino
This leaves my HS choices free of preds, I usually ad a whirlwind to pin and give me some anti light troop capacity and a dev squad with plasma cannon - leathal against heavy armoured troops
the dev squad can get expensive but otherwise you are looking at about one squad per 200 points of the army until you feel you have enough Razorbacks and then a squad for about a hundred points, plus 200 poitns each for the snipers and the buffer squad and 100 for the HQ and the whirlwind
Everything you have been told is a lie!
My salamander army is built up around the same idea.
I've got 4 5-man squads armed with plasma gun and HB/Melta/las plus that the sergeant is armed with plasma pistol and signum (expensive but.. ). If someone get's to close they'll recieve 4 plasma shots (with reroll) and one heavy weapon hit. Very effective when supported by a devastator squad with 4 missile launchers (reroll of course ) and a predator with 2 HB and a lascannon (reroll). A firebase like that supported by assault units in rhinos and you've got an army of great calibre.
