Sorry if this has been addressed before, but...
I was courious about the IG Regiment numbers, ie. 122nd Cadian, 8th Cadian 182nd Moloch Rifles etc. I was wondering how these came around, and, how to apply them to my army. Am I able to just pick a number, and how is that number applyed to the models on the board? I mean I squad numbers which are different from Infranty Squad to Infantry Squad but that obvisously isn't the same.
So are you able to just pick a number, or is there different backgrounds on each etc? Sorry, im not to good to do with anything fluff related ATM, but I would love to read more
The IG Codex should have the numbering system detailed in full (somewhere near the front if i remember). I'll attempt to give you a brief run down from memory though.
Every regiment within an army such as Cadians or Mordian Iron Guard has a number, so the 101 Cadians would be a regiment. Within each regiment every squad then has its own 3 digit number, with 001 through 099 reserved for, i think, veteran and stormtrooper squads. Command squads have a 2 digit number with a skull between the digits, like 3$4, where the $ sign is the skull.
Like I said, this is from memory, and Im not a guard player and so don't have a codex to hand. If you want all the details I advise reading codex Guard. Hope that helps though, and that a Guard player can point out any mistakes I made.
Just to add a little
as windbourne said each regiment has a number 101st 8th etc. This has no impact on the regiment its just so that when an army is put together with divisions and brigades etc it can be identified. basically a planets first regiment created would be 1st X second 2nd X etc etc
As far as shoulder pad numbers are concerned windbourne got it exactly right for the cadians.
I personally use the german 2nd world war numbering system where the first number is the company number the second is the platoon number and the third is the squad or tank number. They used it on just their tanks but i use it on most stuff!! eg 213 would be second company first platoon third tank.
hope this helps
