Ok, I admit that I used to despise Ogryn soooooo much. I walked in to the shop one time and found an Imperial guard player using as many ogryns as possible. I just couldn't see why he liked them so much.
Just like how 'nid players love their gribbly monstrous creatures and the eldar players love their avatars this kid loved the ogryns.
Just recently it's as if I've caught a disease. I had one doctrine point to spend and was tossing up between conscripts and special weapon squads. Just as I am about to make a decision I notice the word ogryn in the restricted troops section and now I'm Ogryn-lover.
When I told this to my gaming buddies they just laughed in my face and compared to ogryn to a cross-breed between orks and humans with a sprinkling of mutant chucked in.
Now I'm not sure if they'll perform well, from what I hear they are not too crash hot in this edition of the rules. But, if any of you guys have got your stories about how they have helped you out please share.
and do any of you guys get bagged by your friends for liking ogryns. and does anyone out there think their cute and adorable, or am I alone in my thinking.
well, it's good I've got that out of mys system. thanks for tuning in.
Hah, I proclaim this thread territory of Ghandi, known as SuperMoose on IRC. If anyone knows what it's like being told just how much Ogryns suck and what a fool he is for using them, it's him.(I'll have to poke him on irc about this thread when I get home.)
I personally will never use Ogryns, I've never liked the models, I belive there are better alternatives that do the same thing but better and it would go against my armyfluff using abhumans, my Lorians are xenophobic to the degree that they don't consider the step between abhuman and xeno to be that big - better to be rid of them just to be sure. But oh, this isn't a thread to be ditzing the Ogryn. People like them and I can understand that, but I don't have to agree with them. I can see their uses, but in the end, I don't deem their usefullness high enough to be worth the cost in both money, painting and conversion effort aswell as points, but each to his own. Use the units you like and have fun and follow up on the trend that my club has. Mock the powergamers instead. :>
i'm not so sure how "useful" they are, but there is a cool conversion page on the US (games workshop)site about them. I believe they used Ogres and Green Stuff , very nice

i have 8 ogryns
i've used them in 3 games 1 game with a squad of 7 and the other 2 games in squad of 6. they did ok. they're tricky to use though.

I find them extremely useful in tying up mobs of orks, or other units with low armor saves. I also plan on using them against my buddy's demon prince that tends to walk through my guard with reckless abandon slaughtering everyone in its path. I'll let you know how that goes lol.
Ogryns make a good speed bump but for the same cost you can get grey knights. The knight has stormbolter, which is better than ripper gun plus they have save of 3 and the same strength as ogryn. So run allies and get some grey knights.
However the ogryns do have 3 times the wounds that a Grey Knight has. Ogryns will lose the wound easier than Grey knights due to their weak save, but it's something to consider when you're trying to speed bump something like banshees or HQ unit. The banshees will wound a grey Grey Knight and Ogryn at the same rate and the power weapon will negate the armour save for both of them. However when using ogryns they survive 3 times as long because you have traded armour for wounds.Originally Posted by bonekrusher
I can see the uses of Ogryns as a good slowing unit, but I prefer a sacrificial line squad with a RR charge to back it up. Speep Bump and strong counter strike.
I would love to play the Ogryn lover at your store though. After a while of using them I'm sure there are some strange ways to use them! Must be fun to run around with huge gribbly abhumans as well.

Archaon's Top Tip for profiting from the End Time: Pillage before you burn
When I say jump you don't ask me 'How high?' maggot! You jump!
However the ogryns do have 3 times the wounds that a Grey Knight has. Ogryns will lose the wound esier than Grey knights due to their weak save, but it's something to consider when you're trying to speed bump somethien like banshees. The banshees will wound kill a Grey Knight as if it were an Ogryn, however if it were an ogryn they would survive 3 times as long
The reasons I take grey knight over ogyrns are as followed
1)save of 3 verus 5
2) higher Initaitve for close combat
4) My justicar has power wpn
5) wpn range 24 verus 12
6) BS skill 4 verus 3 so I can hit more stuff in shooting phase
7) You are still subject to instant kill. So when they fire lasercannons and missile launchers you will die as fast as grey knights. So much for the wounds helping out.
Now let change that from banshees to SM. 10 Sm with a sergeant with powerfist.
At least I can strike the same time with my grey knight and with my one pw. You will
have to wait then strike with what left and then face a pf. I think my chances are better
Only time ogryns are better off is when you are facing a whole squad of powerwpns(banshees eilte choice). Which are much lesser likley than the standard 10 SM one with powerfist( troop choice)
I have a list I am currently working on, a grenadier list with 30 storm troopers with chimeras, 2 russes, a basilisk, 4 lascannon setinals, a autocannon fire support squad, hq, and 30 ogryns
if they want to waste the anti tank weapons killing my ogryns, let them. my tanks will kill them...if they shoot the tanks, the ogryns will close and slaughter them in close combat...imagine a 90 wounds meat shield...makes me drool just think about it
