I've just been in the "New IG Codex (fake)" thread and didnt want to hijack it so....
I've been thinkin about armoured cars for a long time then white dwarf came along with one in then on ebay i found the perfect wheels so armoured car time started..
I started by converting a chimera which is practically scratch built then i went for a normal armoured car to use as an autocannon chimera then it snowballed.....
Here are a few ideas for all of this slots that arent filled by IG Tanks in the Codex
1. The scout car (this is kinda like the salamander but not open topped)
front side rear BS
armour 12 10 10 3
weapons: turret autocannon, hull mounted heavy bolter, storm bolter
Notes: vehicle is agile (its explained in the VDR rules in UKWD252 dont want to put it up if its copyrighted)
Fast attack choice
2. light tank (a little bit better than the chimera)
front side rear BS
armour 12 11 10 3
weapons: autocannon (BS4) (turret), heavy bolter, storm bolter
Notes: 1-2 Heavy support choice
3. Medium tank (upgunned and armoured light tank)
front side rear BS
armour 13 11 10 3
weapons: twin linked lascannon (turret), heavy bolter, storm bolter
Notes: heavy support choice
All points are from the VDR. Limiting the light to medium tanks to a hull and turret weapon i think downgrades them enough. I was unsure about giving the scout car a scout move but i think its fast enough anyway. Fluff wise it could possibly be used as part of a rrecon or PDF force (which is what i use mine for). These rules arent play tested yet. the beauty is I can use the scout car as a light tank (for play testing). other possibilities include making the scout car have a Heavy bolter in the turret am a bit unsure so all ideas welcome!!
What do people think then?
I actually love your ideas because it gives IG players a cheaper option of vehicles, like the medium or light tank, which would really help whenever I can't stuff in the Russ.
Only thing I would wanna do is make the front armour of the scout car 11, scouts often don't have heavy armor like that in order to keep swift with their scouting, this is illustrated by our brother scouts in the marines.
sounds good to me was toying with the idea is there really much difference between 11 and 12 in game terms with what can actually hit it though cos realy if there isnt its gona change to 11 (which cuts the points a little aswell!!)
Av11 and AV12 is a big difference in the game. Av11 means that light weapons such as big shootas, heavy bolters and most light ordnance have a small chance of scratching it, if they get lucky. If the AV is 12 or more, it means the vehicle can only really be damaged by dedicated anti-tank weapons, (Crack grenade launchers, plasma weapons etc) so at this level thay are beginning to approach the protection of medium tanks.
Why not give them an AV10 and make them fast? AV10 vehicles can be taken out by bolt guns and suchlike, but don't forget that boltguns are very advance weapons used by an elite force. AV10 would at least garantee immunity from most small arm fire (lasguns, autoguns, shotguns) pretty much the same level of protection that real armoured cars are at. The added speed might be handy as well as armoured cars tend to be a lot faster than tanks.
Anyhow, I think an IG armoured car regiment is a great idea. You could have some pretty good fights against Ork Kults of Speed. Vroom vroom dakka dakka!

hmmmm i was thinking AV11 and Agile instead of AV10 and fast. AV10 on front means itll be too vulnerable every man and his dog has a bolter or equivalent so even if theyre elite they are too common. Agile is a good medium as it isnt too fast dont want Ig being speedy now do we lol. the sentinel already fills they low AV heavy weapon niche in my opinion tho.

troops as light tanks 1-2 per slot
fast attack as scout car
medium tank heavy support with 0-1 leman russ
just need elites ooo this could be a good list v fun to use cmon keep those ideas coming its forming already.
Good idea in principle, still think we got a ways to go before its practical though. Your first two ideas are just a Salamander and a Chimera with pretty much just one small tweak and a pintle storm bolter. I think we can do a bit more to set ourselves apart here. The last idea for medium battle tank is pretty, for the most part similar to something I've drawn up. I don't really like the idea of a twin-linked lascannon on the vehicle though. With a few noted exceptions, Guard don't look to tanks to destroy other tanks. Maybe a lascannon in the turret would work (though I'm not the biggest fan), but lets not go with twin-linked. I'll post some ideas up here in a bit for my take on things.

Good ideas, the guard are such a cool army as you have a lot of room for your own imagination as you cant have any fun with the marines or elder ect.. (maybe orks)
As said the scout car could do with a drop in armour then you could make it faster and drop the points a bit, it is a lot like the salamander with its autocannon so maybe it could have a heavy stubber and could carry 5 men? Good for a commander having a look at the front line as you could get his Ld were it is needed (and what good commander walks anywere):yes:
the light tank is good as the chimera is way to good for guardsmen to move around in and it would be a good land speeder killer for its cost
As for the Medium tank it is too similar to the predator for my liking, maybe give it heavier armour on the sides of something or give it some diffent weapon options

@ Sokhar: that was kinda the idea for the first two they are practically the same (but with wheels) could do with changing though. Any specific ideas to change them?
The twin linked lascannon was just cos i well had one lying around after making the autocannon predator turret for the armoured car. single one might be good. I was thinking that by limiting them to heavy support and making them compete with a leman russ they might become less unstabilising. cant wait to see those ideas too.
@KOS-MOS. the thing is agile so it is actually faster i didnt want to go the whole hog and make it fast because then it would be a bit too flexible. Heavy stubber is nice although i have the exact scratch built/conversion vehicle you suggest. It seems when physically looking at it that it should be a command vehicle though. I was thinking of the scout car as merely a stripped down light tank hence less armour more speed same weapons. though weapons changes could be a good idea. As for the medium tank well the predator is a medium tank so it will look similar (and hey the idea actually uses the predator turret lol) I like the different weapons options ideas. i was thinking a conquerer battle cannon maybe but was a bit reticent because of its size.
As for the autocannons i have a strange liking for them. While we are on the subject of light vehicles, I was also thinking of slipping half tracks in here too. So they would perhaps be hmm a transport option with 11 10 10 armour open topped and have a pintle heavy stubber all for ooo i dunno 50 points? thats how it comes out of the VDR!! itd make mech forces a lot cheaper; though the lack of armour/weapons, while making it cheap, makes it vulnerable. perhaps a mortar carrying half track as a fire support team option at 70 points? dune buggies are also another nice option at around 40 points + weapons as a sentinel replacement? I want to try and avoid bikes in this thread though as while they may fit they arent vehicles as such.
Well lets try to make them more guard oriented. So instead of three weapons lets keep it to two or three but I would recomment limiting them to
Pintle Heavy Stubber
Now for your vehicles instead of giving automatic pintle mounts go coaxil heavy stubbers. That still allows you to slap a pintle mounted stubber on it and makes it feel more "guardy".
So the armored car should have
Turret: Autocannon and coaxil stubber
Light tank. No BS4 because that makes them too much like HQ units and ACEs in armored company and armred battle group HQ (See imperial Armour Volume 1)
Turret: Autocannon and coaxil stubber
Hull: Hvy Bolter
Medium Tank: Lots of shots but still no danger to land raiders and russ's (except for the sides and back)
Turret: Autocannon coaxil heavy bolter
Hull: Autocannon coaxil heavy stubber
Just some suggestions.
