I am looking at kitting my my demolishers with Melta or Plasmas? What is the best configuration?
I am currently leaning towards plamsa due to the blast and range but I know meltas are much better for killing tanks? So the debate is which is best and should I sacrifice range for killing power? I am leaning towards a melta so I have more dedicated anti-armor in my list but the 24" issue bothers me as it really limits me to just the DC on the 1st turn.
But my hull mount is fitted with a LC for anti armor work.
My 1st demolisher used HBs but now that my AC is more developed and has 3 exterminators I think I can afford to pack some more terminator or tank killing power. In my 1850 list there are 2 demolishers in there but I figured I could maximize by going for duplicate demolishers. So once again I am seeking suggestions and please give me some reasons why as I look into doing this before final painting both seeing as how I am settling into my list.
Really depends on what you want your Demolisher to do. If you want it to move and be aggressive, or just absorb firepower, then your best bet is to go with the 3-heavy bolter arrangement. For sitting and shooting, plasma cannons can be nice and then the hull lascannon isn't such a bad choice. But the plasma sponsons pretty much rules out any effective movement since you're losing a lot of firepower when you move. Its a weakness of the Demolisher design. Shame they didn't tack on a special rule allowing it to fire an additional "main" weapon when its on the move. Its an infantry support tank that can't support infantry worth a toss with its normal weapons configuration.

I still figure there are only two real ways to equip the Demolisher properly.
1> Defensive: Lascannon, Plasma sponsons, smoke.
2> Offensive: Three Heavy Bolters, Smoke, EA.
Like Sokhar mentioned, the new move and shoot rules hamstrung other ways of equipping this fine tank. A tank ace Vanquisher is a much better AT tank anyway.

I really dont like giving demolishers anything other than 3 heavy bolters, for either defensive or offensive use. I do have a demol with 2 plasma cannons and a lascannon, but generally, these weapons are only really ever used max once per game, whilst the enemy is out of range of the demol cannon. And for that reason they are a waste of points in my book. I'd prefer more guardsmen.
Also, regardless of the style of mission you are playing, mobility is almost always the key to a successful strategy, otherwise you are always merely responding to what the other guy is doing, rather than dictating your own terms. Thats another reason why i prefer to take the 3 heavy bolters option, as they can be fired on the move. You could take a lascannon, I suppose, but i feel thats really mixing up the use of the tank, as I prefer to specialise a little bit. Let my lascannon toting guardsmen fill that gap.
See that is the problem I have no lascannon toting guardsmen in my armored company. I do however have a vanquisher + 3 exterinators + 2 Russ's with HLC + SHB and them my two demolishers.
So the point of this query was to maximize my AT ability because my 2 russ's + 3 exterminatos has the Anti-Infantry side covered and the demolisher can always pop things with its pieplate. For anti-tank work as I said I have the vanquisher + 2 sentinels with Lascannons and 2 russ's with HLC + the demolishers with HLC.
Now I don't look at the demolishers as being limited on speed because they still have pieplates. If I get close then I bunker down and park a tank beside them for cover and blaze away with sponson and hull weaponry because in the long run you get more hits but I need something that can tackle big creatures and vehicles and it seems Plasma Cannons and meltas are the way to go as opposed to just a single wound causing demolisher shot at times.
And generally the 1st thing to be shot on my side of the table is the handy demolisher because it is always the first put down.
Sounds like you know what you want, and even have a strategy for it... Go with it.

Ha! Yeah, sorry, didn't read your post properly. I guess thats what happens when you post really tired. Really really tired. Damn exams. =)See that is the problem I have no lascannon toting guardsmen in my armored company.
I like 2 plasmas and a hull lascannon. very defensive, but quite formidable.
When the enemy is 48" away, you have the lascannon, then at 36" you have plasmas, then at 24" of course you've got the demolisher cannon.
But as stated, if you want to be offensive then stick w/ three HB's.
Multi meltas are a complete waste...if the enemy is 24" away you should be firing the demolisher.

Im in the same delma now and from what i can guess,...
The Demo cannon is insane and good for anything right?
Well Meltas and lascannon are good for tanks
Plamsa for H.infantry
H.bolters for any infantry-and good for moving a shooting.
I think heavy bolters would be best cuz
1) moving and shooting
2)will finish off what every infantry survives the demo cannon.
2) good for heavy infantry
1) good for tanks...kinda
2) good for 2nd shot at tank
I think iether bolter with plasma or Lasconnon with Bolter...i dont know...im confused
Hey does the plasma cannon's get's hot rule apply to tanks, of so how?
