I've been toying with idea of building a drop trooper army for ages now. Just recently been thinking of ways in which I'd actually build them, and haing some trouble. Ideas would be appreciated!
These are some "mock ups" I build some time ago, but went off of them for various reasons - mainly the colour scheme. They were painted up quickly for purpose of geneal army idea, so don't hold the rush-job against me!!
These were built with Cadian bodies, Catachan legs and vox-caster heads. I like the Catachan leg poses - much more active than the Cadians. The grav-chute packs are from Hasslefree.
I've just finished a mock-up Harakoni Warhawk as well - built from an SM scout body, vox-caster head. Problem with the scouts is that they carry either shotguns or boltguns; i decided to extend the muzzle of the bolter with a lasgun. Not happy with these either - the paintscheme is good, but the poses are stiff and limited. Plus, I'd end up with virtually no heavy weapons other than a heavy bolter....
Other plan was to convert some Kasrkin. These are lovely miniatues. This US artucle has some ideas for conversions (also some socut conversions) - http://us.games-workshop.com/news/wh...BitzPieces.pdf. But... Kasrkin only carry hellguns, and again I'd end up with few poses.
My final plan is to go with FW respirator heads on Cadian bodies. That would perhaps be prcy, and I'd end up without any carapace armour.... But would have the felexibility of the Cadian/Catachan poses....
Anyone else tied any such Imperial Guard conversions??? I'd love to get some feedback, ideas, etc. - even better, post your drop trooper pictures!
[Mods - if I've posted in wrong place please just move this post - I wasn;t sure ether it should be under Conversion or IG]
I'd like a closer shot at the grav packs but otherwise they look very neat.
Out of personal preference I would have painted the mouth breather bits the same colour as the rest of the armour. At the moment they look like they've all got a personal massive megaphone on their face.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
We can learn from history that paratroopers often had camo in some way or another. When they would land, they would often be behind enemy lines, and so required a stealthy approach. Camo only aided in this, so you should paint the guys looknig like they have more camoflage rather than just the scheme you have now.
Also, the only thing you have to do with drop troops are the gasmasks, perhaps get some packs of some sort (SM scouts/marines?) to simulate a pack that would have had a parachute or some other thing.
Thanks for feedback.
They all have backpacks except for the sergeant and heavy weapons troopers. I've just tried to find a shot of a clear grav-chute from the images I took, butouldn;t find one. Basically looks like a small jump-pack, with two flumes stretching from power core. Nice packs actually, but not sure whether to drop them for the GW HW backpack (which would be an expensive option...)
I used to be big believer in camo for troops, but currently gone off of it. Difficult to make to believable and good-looking on a miniature I think. If I do end up with Harakoni, I'll likely do them very bright khaki/sand colour.
I take onboard the face mask feedback! I just kinda like that head piece. The mithril/chainmail clouring accentuates that bit, which is why I like the colour. But I might change it if I go with Harakoni.
Would these guys pass as being in carapace armour? I would argue that the flight suits are padded up and probably damage resistent (to a degree....!).
Fluffiwise, carapace armor is a heavier armor, and paratroopers wanna be more light than not. Fluffwise, abd idea, model wise, sure, I guess they could count as carapace...
The FW elysian respirator heads could be an alternate route, it's a basic pack of 12 elysian heads with the drop trooper helmets and respirators. Doesn't look half-bad on cadians. The color scheme does kinda bother me (more the concept than execution). I tend to agree some sort of camo would be nice and the silver bits distract too much. The catachan legs are also kinda wierd as look too thin compared with the somewhat bulky upper body.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
Take it from somone that is a paratrooper...I will take interceptor body armor over a flak vest any day of the week...Originally Posted by flakdragon

Here are some pictures of the grav-chute:
I'm surprised some think that the legs look too thin! The catachans are much bigger actually, and that goes for legs as well. I think they look pretty good for that "flight suit" look.
Also, a Harakoni test model - just bear in mind that all of these are quick tester models (so the paint job is scrapp):
As for carapace being heavier for drop troopers, just a choice thing I guess - but I like it!
i quite like both models, only thing i dont care for is the Harakoni's lasgun, but the conversion is good!

Those packs look cool, nice pic. I agree with the color of the masks, definitly change it, wayyyyyy too distracting. That warhawk looks "chunky" as does his lasgun, hehe.
